Kabaneri of the Iron Fortress: The Battle of Unato Sequel Anime Film Reveals Teaser Video, Visual

Film centering on Mumei opens in spring 2019

The official website for the Kabaneri of the Iron Fortress anime began streaming a teaser video on Saturday for the Kabaneri of the Iron Fortress: The Battle of Unato (Kōtetsujō no Kabaneri: Unato Kessen) sequel anime film.

Mumei: Hey Ikoma, do you remember? That day. I remember it like it was yesterday. You made the promise at the shrine with that idiotic serious face of yours. You said I had a place to return to, you said I wasn't alone anymore, and that someone's hands are very warm. You taught me all these different feelings. So, I won't hesitate anymore. I will definitely find out the secret of Unato. Even if I'm alone.

The site also revealed a visual.

The video confirms the returning cast and staff. The cast includes:

  • Tasuku Hatanaka as Ikoma
  • Sayaka Senbongi as Mumei
  • Maaya Uchida as Ayame
  • Toshiki Masuda as Kurusu
  • Kanae Oki as Kajika
  • Mariya Ise as Yukina
  • Ryota Ohsaka as Sukari
  • Kensuke Satou as Kibito

Tetsuro Araki is returning to direct the film at Wit Studio, and is also the film's scriptwriter. Code Geass creator Ichiro Okouchi, who wrote the TV series' scripts, is credited with organization. Haruhiko Mikimoto (Macross 7, Gunbuster) is credited with the original character design, and Hiroyuki Sawano (Attack on Titan, Aldnoah.Zero) is returning to compose the music. Shochiku Media Division is distributing the film.

The film will open in Japan in spring 2019 and will focus on the character Mumei. The film will take place half a year after the story of the original television anime series. The official website for the anime lists the film as the "middle volume."

The original Kabaneri of the Iron Fortress television anime aired from April-July 2016. The series streamed on Amazon Prime Video with English subtitles as it aired in Japan. The series has also received two compilation films that premiered in December 2016 and January 2017 in Japan. The two films covered the anime's first season with some new and enhanced scenes. Crunchyroll screened the films in North American theaters in April 2017.

The "steampunk survival action" story takes place on the island country Hinomoto, where humans hide themselves in fortresses called stations against the threat of zombie-like beings with steel hearts known as "Kabane." Only armored locomotives known as "Hayajiro" go between the stations.

DMM Games is producing a PC browser/smartphone game for the franchise titled Kōtetsujō no Kabaneri -Ran- Hajimaru Michiato (Kabaneri of the Iron Fortress -Revolt- Beginning Tracks). The game will launch this fall.

Shirō Yoshida launched a manga adaptation of the manga Monthly Comic Garden in May 2016, and the manga will end in November.
