Sort of enjoyed the first episosed of The Perfect Insider. Shiki Magata is a creepy yet alluring character. She has me intrigued.

I don't see the show as pretentiously intellectual. Rather, it's showing us that Sōhei Saikawa is. Indeed, I don't think he believes in or cares about a word he says. He's a cynic seeking deliverance and hopes to find it though Magata.

Moe Nishinosono is much sharper than her sensei: intuitive and with a sly ability to see through people's dissemblings. She could also be interesting.

At this stage it's Magata as a concept/character and the Magata/Nishinosono relationship that will have me watching the next episode.

What is (as in, just listing one) series do you folks want Funi to do broadcast dubs of this season? For me, it is Concrete.

I forgot to ask: Did anybody else think that Sohei's office in Perfect Insider had a strong resemblance to Touko's office in Kara no Kyoukai? In both series, the office was a place where people just ranted on about philosophy.

  • JK Meshi A short-form anime; not too impressive one. The episode went from the French Revolution to being about miso soup & diets. Production seems to be Vampire Holmes-esque. Take that as you will.

  • Kowabon Another short-form anime, this one is horror-themed. For a 3-minute piece, that one was quite suspenseful. Kudos.

  • Sakurako-san no Ashimoto ni wa Shitai ga Umatteiru I got a strong Ranpo Kitan: Game of Laplace or a CSI: Crime Scene Investigation vibe from that show-opener (it might've resembled Bones as well, but aside from seeing an episode or two back in '06/'07-ish, I haven't watched the show, so I can't really tell). I liked the aesthetics of the show; the visuals, art style, and color palettes used, as well as the title card, are very Aldnoah.Zero, which is somewhat to be expected, since studio TROYCA was in charge of half that project.

I liked Kujō Sakurako personally quite a bit. I have a bit of thing when it comes to quirky, eccentric characters; when done right, they can liven up the atmosphere, and her characters' behavior is marvelous. As for whom I consider the deuteragonist, Tatewaki Shōtarō, I get that his role is to be the voice of proper etiquette & show the "proper" reaction people should have to certain situations, but he somehow rubs me the wrong way; I found him to be a bit annoying, frankly.

While the overall narrative was fun to watch -- and quite informing -- the investigations were solved a bit too quickly, IMO. I think if the show had slowed-down to focus on a single case, it might've felt a bit better. As for the critique about why Kujō didn't explain her theory in The Couple's scene of crime, I thought of a possible explanation: she practically yelled an order to that poor country officer, which since he (apparently) isn't used to either being yelled on, or being yelled on by civilians (take your pick), obeyed an stopped the car. Kujō then continues to the scene and the same to the flabbergasted personnel at the scene. While she begins to process the bodies (and that's where the show jumps forwards to the police station, so this is pure speculation from now on), the detective regain his bearing, and either due to that his duty is to keep outsiders and irrelevant persons away from the scene, or due to not wanting his reputation of a "professional detective" to be damaged by having a civilian telling him how to do his job, and promptly had her escorted to the station. Looking at it that way, it can, for me, address the issue of why she didn't explain her theory at the scene.

Overall, I think that it was one of the stronger mystery-themed show-opener I've seen

  • Tai-Madō Gakuen 35 Shiken Shōtai An OK episode. Sure, it went by the routine checklist like most LN-adapted, [High-School] shows nowadays do, but the execution was slightly of the better side of the mediocrity. That Bunny Suit Incident? He wasn't at fault for that one, unlike in a certain show. Him carrying a sword in the era of guns & magic? The dialog in the episode implied that sword-based techniques are still in use, but considered "outdated" or "inferior" to guns & magic ones, so it isn't like he chose to be rad because no-one uses a sword. Him being soothed by supposedly hearing his little sister's voice? Yeah, I agree with you there, a bit worrying characterization. And lastly, him slipping and accidentally cupping a feel? That's where my impression of the episode went from "it might be pretty decent" to "arghh! Really?" And as far as [Magic High-School] shows go, overall it wasn't all that bad (but seriously, why the accidental slip? Why?)

  • Fushigi na Somera-chan Another short-form anime (I think it's the 5th-or-so I watched this Season). It quite Southpark-y; In the first seconds of the episode, the main character, Nonomoto Somera, is visiting in a zoo or something and is near a cat-faced llama, spoiler[only for her to have her stomach pierced by this creature within the next 5 seconds]. And that's before the OP starts! Would watch again.

Well that's pretty much only two shows I'm watching on Crunchyroll this cour, and one of them is already available on Daisuke for free along with the two big names, One-Punch Man and Gundam Yadda Yadda. At least Comet Lucifer looks interesting enough.

Beautiful Borer did nothing to pique my curiosity, Anti-Magic Academy was even worse than I remembered from the manga, and I don't even think anything happened in The Perfect Insider.

Lance N' Masques has too many loli overtones that I'm almost certain it's supposed to be a thinly veiled parody, and I already want the little girl to die which is not a good start. The only character I like is the horse because the art reminds me of the pet alligator from my guilty pleasure anime He Is My Master.

Overall, it looks like I'll be playing catch-up from last season.

I'm excited to see that Valkyrie Drive anime to finally stream because I want to see if will get torn apart in the preview guide. Only thing funnier than watching a train wreck will be reading other people's thoughts on it. In particular, I wanna see if Zac will dislike it and post another one of his funny reviews on it.

Course the show may shock everyone and be decent, but... I'm hoping it's god awful for the funny comments.

Shomin Sample.. uhmm.... I read some of the manga, and it was decent... but it does not work as an anime. Granted, it wasn't anything special to begin with, but everything seems so much duller.

I think the president of the school and the maid in Shomin Sample are the ones most in need of connecting with the real world. If the students are failing to integrate with society (and apparently men), how about not isolating them in the first place? As to his response to the kidnapping, that's not a "commoner" response. That's the regular response. Also, I would be less worried about him doing anything to the girls than vice versa, as the red head did attempt to sexually assault him. There is no need to emasculate him (it seemed like they wanted to smooth him out completely down there, so emasculation is the correct term over castration, which is just the balls). They need to completely rethink their education methodologies if it is failing that hard.

Oof, Shomin Sample.

Is Silver Link overstretched this season? Because it's a bad sign when even the OP has prolonged off-model shots of the heroines. The character designs are too rough and undetailed enough as well; there was one scene where Kimito's hairstyle made his head like a xenomorph's.

Of the LN adaptations with the lead voiced by Atsushi Tamaru and the LN adaptations produced by Silver Link, this one definitely got the short end of the stick.

The English phrase "The Perfect Insider" is part of the anime's full original title and is used as a subtitle on the cover of the original novel, but the latter's title proper is Subete ga F ni Naru (Everything Becomes F).

Genuinely curious: is that a play on words? That everything becomes "fucked"? Or everything becomes "a failure", like in the A-F grading system? Or does "F" have some other meaning I'm not aware of, like how "H" gets used as a stand-in for "hentai"?

Magata mentioned something about B and D being like 7 during the episode, but I have no idea what she meant - the letters in the alphabet, musical notes, bondage and discipline? Smile I imagine it has something to do with that, so maybe we're not supposed to understand it yet.

I don't remember there being hate-watches before, the only one I remember that intended to be one was the one Hope reviewed Lord Marksman and Vanadis but she ended up enjoying the show.

Just wanted to clarify that no, that was not a hatewatch either. Lord Marksman and Vanadis was a case where nobody else on staff wanted the show and I volunteered to take it because I thought it was pretty okay. I gave it a "3" in the preview guide and was pretty kind to it. So I was always pretty hopeful on Lord Marksman and Vanadis, I didn't think it was a bad show at any point.

We have literally assigned someone "hatewatches" only when there's no other option (literally no one on staff likes it, but there's too much demand not to cover it, and some writers are interested in writing about it despite not liking it.) And even then, these are assigned only with the caveat that the writer try to review the show looking for the positive in it and being fair, rather than gleefully tearing it apart, which we never allow. Examples of this include DRAMAtical Murder and Chaos Dragon. It's not very often.

Now I'm curious. What was the redeeming circumstance for DRAMAtical Murder?
