Manga Entertainment, Bandai Entertainment, and ADV Films were among the other North American anime distributors that co-produced and developed anime titles, instead of just acquiring exisiting anime titles.

Does anyone know specific examples?

I've been out of the loop when it comes to American non-superhero graphic novels, but I'm sure there's plenty of them that would be done well anime-wise.

Y: The Last Man, maybe? Seems like a natural Wink

God I hate Funimation. Why don't they focus on releasing quality work instead of messing around where they don't belong. This is why I don't support the American industry. If you want to really support anime get it directly from Japan, even if you don't understand the language.
At silly over-inflated prices? Hell no.

They should have opened this up to Independent production companies to co-produce their shows. Anything that tries to hold all the eggs in their own basket eventually trips and breaks a few of them. Thats too bad - I was hopeful for a minute or two I could throw 100 or so shows at them at see if any stuck.

If so, then for the love of all things sacred I hope they do something better than the crap-fest that was Afro Samurai....

That crap fest was something like the #2 selling DVD for the past 2 years. It made FUNi a ton of money.

We will see more projects like Afro Samurai (FUNi), Witchblade(Top Cow), Heroman (Stan Lee), etc being made. Things like Fruits Basket season 2 which FUNi so badly wants are unlikely because there is a Japanese publisher attached to the property.

But we also see where most of the companies that did that have ended up. Tactics was one of ADV's co-funded titles as I recall from a Comic-con & then they chose to not issue it. If you look on the credits, some of them do include ADV, but I'm not going over all my ADV anime to see which they have their name in the Japanese side of the credits.
Geneon USA was behind the Hellsing OVA from what I've heard.
Manga-Dead Leaves & Karas.

Yeah, but Manga also requested Street Fighter Alpha: Generations be made.

Dont forget that Bandai Ent also aligned with Cartoon Network to continue with Big O II , not to mentioned both co align with Production IG to create Imortal Grand Prix and both were actualy good, especially big O II.

wont be susprised CN had something to do with the cowboy bepop movie as well since it was it's main anime cash cow during when Adult Swim first started in early 2001.

suggestion no, but If they want to front the money and get Hakusensha to come on board, yes. Which is what they are planning on doing.
On the simplest level they are going to be putting up money to make shows they think will sell well in NA. And of course these shows will be sold by them in the NA.

Erm, an anime of a manga that does not exist?
http://dragonball.wikia.com/wiki/Dragon_Ball_AF
FUNimation's own FAQ states that AF does not exist and isn't being produced.
