"Quite a few will think it's fine to look at little girls and think they're sexy"
I 100% AGREE WITH THIS ARTICLE! This is why Japan is declining in birth rates...

So....she's worried about moe characters teaching both young girls/teens that being sexy is cute, but yet this psychologist isn't going to touch upon the issue of real live girls being recruited into musical groups wearing inappropriate clothing and singing/dancing in front of real men?
I agree with the psychologist that constantly exposing young children to sexy characters does give them the wrong impression. Children soak up things from their environment, and if that's one where they constantly exposed to images of cute girls wearing school outfits in provocative poses, it'll be something they'll try to emulate when they get a school uniform, even if they don't do it in public.
After decades of living in a society that highlights and promotes the role of teenage girls and young women as being a sexual one, many of us have largely become desensitized to it. We don't think much about 14 and 15 year old boys and girls who dress and sing provocatively much because that's what Western culture has exposed us to for the last 30 or so years. Many adults find these 'child' stars hot; A good portion of groups like One Direction have a much older fanbase.
However, most of us are content to leave that as a fantasy. Most teens and adults do not see an image of a cute, 10 year old girl and rush out to the local elementary school for a hook up. It's only those that are mentally perverse that view this as being acceptable.
Instead of pointing fingers at the characters, why doesn't this psychologist instead address the mental health problem in Japan? When you have a society that views people who have mental health issues as bringing shame upon themselves, their family and society, telling artists to stop drawing scantily clad characters should be the least of their concerns.

The article says she is a clinical psychologist as well. Those do in fact do research.

I'm not just saying that because of breast size.

Or better yet how about the old assumption that pornography would lead to an increase in sexual assault.

Yeah, without her citing actual research or evidence, it doesn't feel like there's much to talk about here. I could randomly make the "argument" that "gender-specific schools can increase the desire in some of their students for sexual assault as they have less opportunities to interact with the opposite gender on a personal level but instead can grow to view them as objects instead". Now, without citing any actual research or evidence to back this up, why would one be surprised if my "argument" wasn't taken too seriously.

I do think she is over-thinking things a bit.
Agreed, that yes people do see 'anime characters' both male and female. As many: cute, attractive, handsome, sexy, pretty and etc.

It seems like her argument relies on inferencing more than hard evidence: She utilizes nothing more than "If ___ then ____" inferences along the way to her ultimate conclusion of A -> B, which B -> C. The lack of any hard evidence just makes this guesswork that sounds correct, but it really isn't.
There are countless examples in our lives where people's fantasies are quite different from the reality they live in. There are websites dedicated to tentacle porn viewers who get off to the idea of anime women getting "ravaged", tied up, raped, etc. But never would they ever want to see this happen in real life, for women to be subjected to them.
And there are quite many more fantasies that people have that they enjoy in their private sphere, but would never act upon in the outside world. Incest, BDSM, old man/young girl, role play, etc.
So why would moe characters be any different. Consumers of moe culture can look at that particular media, find the characters cute, or even sexy, but would also abhorrently reject child pornography or child predation. Much in the same way a parent can consume incest media about daughters without actually having sexual feelings for his children. Or a dominant who enjoys BDSM sexual experiences, but would never kidnap women and physically abuse them.
This is because, as I iterated above, people can make conscious ethical decisions that a fictional character (or a real-life adut content film/ real life adult situations) are not indicative of one's real life, and can separate those categories.
However, people will believe this psychiatrist's work anyways. They'll run with the idea that Japan is cultivating child predators simply based upon a loose notion that fictional moe characters -> child predation. More ammo for the people who think all anime is porno cartoons.

Speaking as someone who does like some forms of moe, (Well, the comically innocent kinds, that is.) I know that the light innocence tames aggression for some people from experience.
For example, let's take Lime from the older Saber Marionette J, her comical naivety makes me smile, because it just makes her more fun. I mean, how can I not laugh and smile at her thinking that a lottery ticket is a magic piece of paper that grants wishes? Moments like that just make me smile. I get really bad anger bursts and seeing her naivety helps me after a bad day.

Wow. The same can literally be said about anything, according to TLC's "My strange addiction". There is a surprisingly large number of people that do...things...with their cars. The MAJORITY will agree cars can be "sexy" in a "cool" way. But there's still a very small (overall) number of people that will take it..seriously.

Sigh... Okay I'm going to use something called logic, so brace yourself. MOE CHARACTERS DO NOT CREATE SEX OFFENDERS OR PEDOPHILES!
Pedophilia occurs in men or woman in two different ways.
1. Said person was abused growing up by a relative/loved one and never received the proper mental health care. Simply put this is what we call the cycle of abuse. Simply put a child is abused, never receives the proper mental health then they go do the same-thing towards another child when they are older.
2. Said person is not mentally healthy from during early puberty. Our sexual identities start surface as we hit puberty. Some pre-teens/teens form a sexual attraction towards those who are younger than they are. Honestly there is no telling why this really happens. However as stated above at this stage these people need to get mental health care before it is to late.
Aye.. regardless what ever happens these are decisions adults choose to make. Trying side-step and not blame those for their actions is becoming old.

With the violent video games argument, I see that it might influence them but doesn't cause someone to be violent.

'Are Psychiatrists Blameless?'
Could constant baseless speculation by psychiatrists lead to the profession being banned and all psychiatric practitioners being hunted down and killed? That's the suggestion made by unknown and reviled poster 'wastrel' on an obscure anime-related web forum on October 8.
Entitled 'Are Psychiatrists Blameless?', the post claimed that psychiatrists' baseless and unsourced newspaper articles are now commonplace in Japan; we see them in papers and on the internet as desperate psychiatrists claim anything to get press or internet attention. The poster acknowledged that most psychiatrists are not themselves insane, but they are often displaying inappropriate levels of attention-seeking behavior. "They won't print my name in the paper unless I make up something involving sex and male-shaming," a deranged so-called 'psychiatrist' admitted.
The web poster admitted that the majority of psychiatric practitioners are well-intentioned professionals, "but quite a few will think it's fine to make up accusations about subsections of society, so perhaps we should eliminate the lot of them, just to be sure." The writer surmised that the deluge of insane drivel produced by the psychiatric writers will make people think we'd all be better off without any of those silly "psychiatrists" around. "But I get uneasy whenever I see such stupid articles, as the thought of people paying any attention whatsoever to such inane babbling seems rather sad."
The posting has elicited a mostly negative reaction online. Several fellow posters called the original poster a big poopy-head, and others speculated without information about the size of the poster's genitals. Others also mentioned that the poster had little true grasp of the proper use of satire or sarcasm. Moderators quickly removed the post, and the writer was banned for life from the forum.
