God of Death, Soul Reaper same thing. It's those hardcore fans that are just azzhole about small stuff like that.

I'm not big into manga at all, so I've never read a Viz manga. Do they typically keep their stuff in the original right-to-left format?

Basically, same thing as tokyopop, right to left, 5x7 sizewise, except Shonen Jump titles are cheaper at 8 bucks.

The reason why people are paranoia by Viz is they have edit:

1. Zoro to Zolo, to match up with the anime (One Piece).
2. In the manga I's, a guy was looking at a porno and the girl in the magazine had her titties cover by stars.
3. A wrestler's butt was edited out in Ultimiate Muscle.

Those are the 3 that I can think of now and they're small edit that really don't take away from the story. It's reasonable edit, but some people are so anal that they're boycotting and missing out on the story. What a bunch of morons.

DN will likely go under the Shonen Advance lineup though.

Apparently, this is a big issue with a lot of ultimate muscle fanboys. Some fans are boycotting Viz and suggest that buyng the original tanks to view the butts in its entirety

Hrmm...AoD says that along with Death Note, Socrates in Love (which sounds horrible yet fascinating at the same time) and Monster (!!!! MONSTER!) were licensed.

Heh. Monster license is SO a followup to the movie rights...

However I could have sworn that someone had the rights to Monster even before the news about the movie (it just never was published?)

This doesn't come as a surprise, (like someone said, Viz pratically owns Shueisha's Jump line up. And Viz is translating the popular ones too, so its not surprise at all. In fact, I saw it coming) but like most published english mangas out there, I'm just wary of the translation.

Personally, I just find it more interesting and meaningful to have Japanese words incorporated with in the translation. (Reading Naruto from Viz as he goes, "Shadow Doopleganger" or something like that just didn't give it the right feel...) In fact, I'd prefer translators have footnotes rather than use an American/English equivalent because sometime its sounds odd (in most cases, corny) in English. OR sometimes, I feel that the translations have been simplified so a general audience can read it and by doing so, this sometimes undermines the way dialogues are written, the puns that happens or the implications/dual meaning of certain words.

I guess if you're looking for a story to simply enjoy, I'd guess the english version would be a good place to start. If you want to go deeper into stuff the English version may leave out (or censor) then maybe learning Japanese and reading the original would be better. Smile

There really is a god.

I've been waiting for such a long time for Death Note to get licensed. I knew it was just a matter of time, it was more the quuestion of "Who's gonnna get it?" I say it's a good thing that Viz got it. I personally don't care if they change the name from "shinigami" to "soul reaper" or "death god" or whatever. I tend to be a lot less stingy with translations than other people. I say an "edited" manga is better than no manga at all!

Now all I have to do is go home, delete those scanslations, and pray that +Anima is next. Very Happy

Well...I guess I'll check it out. But the Japanese GN's are really cool. With the slip-on covers and all. I just hope VIZ doens't screw with any translation or anything.

I always preferred "soul reaper" as well. I think that could possibly be because I started reading Bleach after I read the preview in Shonen Jump, as opposed to seeing "death god" in a scanlation or fansub. "Death god" seemed a little wrong to me as well, since they didn't really seem that much like gods. Well, hopefully this will turn out well and set Viz on the road to a more general acceptance.

I generally like a translation as close as possible as the original, but being too literal sometimes makes the manga hard to read. I like how Del Rey has translation notes at the end though.

I thought it seemed a bit like an oxymoron...
