I sometimes just wish anime would become "mainstream" outside of Japan...

It is not mainstream even in Japan (outside kids' demographics).

Which exactly is the problem of anime industry. Miyazaki had this one right.

A lot of anime is mainstream out of Japan, it just happens to be for never-ending kid shows or shounen stuff. You're not going to see a Shingeki no Kyojin every single year, let alone season.

Right now we're currently in another big anime boom if you will. There is more anime being produced now than there has been for years...

Last year they produced about 200 new anime series, roughly the same as in 2006 which was the record year.

Problem is, however, that last year the revenue of disk sales sunk to level not seen since 2001.

That equation is not causing any happy smiles in anime industry.

This year it looks like we are getting less new series already, based on 2 first seasons and forecast for third.

I know it's not mainstream in Japan, but that doesn't matter. At the very least the creators already know the potential of animation as a medium. I'm just saying that the west should realize that already, and some anime making it big here would be a good way to do that.

Of course it matters. It they cannot break to mainstream in Japan, they for sure cannot do it elsewhere either.
