I had decided to wash my hands off this thread because I actually do not like to waste my time arguing with randos online just for the sake of arguing, unlike the accusation that was made against me. But allow me to offer some final contextualization to my initial comments.

For a long time, non-pornographic queer content creators have struggled with the barrier imposed by the generalization of any queer content as pornographic. This has been documented in queer film scholarship but can also be applied to other visual media as well. Many content distributors couldn't distinguish between queer and pornographic contents and often put them in the same space. In order for their content to be taken "seriously," queer content creators who are not pornographic content creators had to deemphasize the queerness of their creation. Of course, there is absolutely nothing wrong with pornographic content but we live in a world that had and is still heavily stigmatizing pornographic content creators and performers. And that calling all queer content pornographic has long been used as a tactic to downplay the significance of non-pornographic queer content.

As another poster has explained eloquently, if so many "serious" or "prestigious" visual media can use heterosexual pornographic element as a signifier of edginess but not have to suffer the risk of being straight-out labeled as pornographic, then queer content creators should be able to do so as well. And back to the topic at hand, it does not seem that the title that Fujimoto recommended is entirely smutty. And that ANN is not clear on how the author of that title would like to label their creation. In light of this issue, to straight out call it gay porn based on a meme is problematic considering the historical connection between gay content and porn.

I understand the need to defend one's colleague in an often toxic online environment. And I've always viewed ANN as a progressive publication when it comes to queer content. If ANN's overall position to the issue I've raised here is "all BL content with pornographic elements are gay porn" and "BL readers don't want to be associated with porn," then I can only say that I'm disappointed.

I have a friend who still hasn't watched Game of Thrones past the first season. The next time I bug them about watching the rest of it, I'm going to tell them I'm recommending to them a heterosexual porn show because it's an age-restricted, sexually explicit show starring male and female characters who have on-screen sex with each other.

I'd like to address something that seems missing from this thread because it really seems like the crux of the argument that distinguishes explicit BL from "gay porn." And this is something that was often present at ANN and was considered a go-to site to appreciate and discuss the uniqueness of BL from a cultural standpoint. I'm similarly disappointed, as others have indicated, that now this is apparently no longer true.

What I'm referring to is the role BL plays for women bombarded by the heteronormative attitudes and traditional gender roles in everyday life. That BL provides an escape from the male gaze and pressures to engage with the opposite sex as if ignoring the implication of what comes next. The author of the article and respected contributors are virtually silent on the matter of Japanese BL uniquely owning this perspective about men as elegant, emotional creatures, equal to women but physically separated from them. Yes I know people have complained that has homophobic and sexist implications in itself, but we still can't deny the existence of this distinction I've mentioned.

Uhhhhh, no need to behave unprofessional Lynzee.

Why not to say something along the lines of “ Thank you for your sharing your opinions and suggestions in this forum. After consideration, this article Will NOT undergo any wording changes. Thank you for understanding.”

Just because there are people disagreeing with you, there’s No need to say unprofessional things like “ email daddy kadokawa” or say people’s opinions are “not of actual value worth considering. “

That’s unprofessional. Everybody has different opinions and we should agree to disagree as long as we respect each other on this forum. Everybody’s opinion should be welcome here.just simply have to say” I agree with you “ or “ I disagree with you and here’s why I think so.” And that’s it. No need to bash anybody on this forum. Especially from executive writer.

any boys love work has even one sex scene throws it in the pornography genre?

There are plenty of animes and works and manga that has nudity scene or sex scene that will probably give it a mature content warning. Why are they not in the pornography genre? You’re going to get a rated R for that work even for ONE sex explicit scene but the entire work itself is not considered pornography. Then again, why not goblin slayer be pornography too? What about all those Ecchi works?

Again, anybody is free to agree or disagree. Just be respectful to everybody’s opinion please.

I'm a bit late, but I'm with ANN staff here. The reason is simple: ANN is a site aimed at the general audience.
And the general audience knows what "yaoi" is. It's a badly drawn porn with giant semes manhandling tiny ukes. The genre has no plot or logic, only sex scenes.
Yes, in reality the genre is a completely different beast nowadays, but the public doesn't give a shit. They're not interested in knowing about it, they just want to avoid it.
So actual suggestion for the staff: more articles like this, please. Also, go back to using yaoi and shounen ai terminology. Those words carry horrible meanings in Japanese language, but no need to reinvent them for an average Americain.
And you guys should discourage Rebecca from reviewing BL period. BL fans have very little in common with her taste and the general public never reads those reviews.
