A pretty good mecha anime with some "samurai" stuff, expecting the 2nd half of the anime to be even better when it comes to story and action.
The only thing i really disliked about it was that sidecharacter that kept pushing his luck goin straight into danger zones just to get special live broadcast with which he even once made a soldier get hurt because he was protected and the dude was like "oh he is human to" >_>

Oh, I'll be talking about that guy more when I review the second half. He gets even worse on that in episode 14.

It definitely had promise at the start, and I especially really liked the first episode, but it gradually became bogged down by cliches and tired fish-out-of-water tropes. I dropped it around episode 5 or 6, I think.

Considering the release of Pokémon Go as well as the ever presence of recording tech in modern society, his character is arguably a relatively standard example of "stuck behind the camera lens" which certainly lends credence that it can be a jab at people constantly walking around like tech zombies taking selfies and live streaming video.

>the review has two As and two Bs
>favors B overall rating because it is closer to the story rating

I can't say I'm not disappointed.

Speaking of camera obsessed video zombies, George Romero tried it years ago with Diary of the Dead. It's not really well liked but I'm always hopeful for a critical reevaluation. But with Kuromukuro, I'm on the guy's side. He may be focused on views but he's up against a very secretive organization for no good reason against a worldwide alien threat... which they tell people about eventually? Seele had ulterior motives but I think Japan is just being pigheaded here.

I liked the "mechs as kaiju" early feel and I also enjoyed the later "hey, mechs are mythical monsters too" historical aspect. I also like the "aliens are kidnapping people because..." -Right, I'm not a fan of how dense the characters are about thinking why they are being kidnapped though and for me, the cliffhanger was more of a "well, about time" moment.

spoiler[Yes Ken, the aliens are invading your ancient society through spies and not trying to find want they want by stealing people's bodies and positions outright. Perfect opportunity for a "taken by the demon" myth tie in completely wasted!]

An overall good series and they even did a good job explaining why the hero mech is so much better than its ally mechs though less so against the enemy mechs. I guess spoiler[its because the older model has a two pilot system so there's one person to watch its back? If so, it's not much of an upgrade then.]

I just finished watching these 13 episodes, and I am liking it so far. I agree with Theron that the wait for these episodes to stream would have been more bearable if an English dub had been made.

I really hope Ponycan USA does not get in the way of Kuromukuro receiving an English dub. Perhaps I am worrying over nothing, but PC USA has shown that they are a terrible company when it comes to doing (physical) releases that make sense.

No one complaining about the awful ending point? It clearly wasn't written with the intention of being split into two halves. Ending at episode 13 was an AWFUL decision. Episode 12 would've been MUCH better to end part 1 at. I've said it before, but we really need more anime fans to pressure them into releasing subtitled anime WEEKLY, like they do in Japan.

I've heard Netflix Japan airs Kuromukuro weekly with English subs, so this is likely what the international release is using.

A lot of the locations featured in Kuromukuro are modeled after real life locations in Japan's Toyama prefecture, which is also where PA Works's HQ is located. For example, the regional Toyama airport located next to the Jinzu River.

Yeah, I really expected this to get a dub with the wait. I feel like too many mecha shows have been disappointingly passing without dubs recently (even moreso up until Gundam IBO atleast got picked up for Toonami).

Because Netflix is not choosing to actually simulcast it, I think I will put my subscription on hold for a while. I don't really feel ashamed watching it on 3rd party sites since NF won't do a simulcast.

Secretive organization? Japan being pigheaded? An alien threat they'll tell people about eventually?

It's the U.N. Literally it's the United Nations that runs the facility the series is centered around. They try and keep a few things secret, but much of what's going on is still public. They can't exactly keep aliens having invaded secret when it's on the news as it's happening. Camera dude doesn't reveal anything to the public that likely wouldn't be revealed in short order anyways, and tends to endanger himself, and others to do so. It's not like they're trying to crack down on information either. If the government was interested in silencing him, it'd be trivial to do so.
