So they won't air it but they've spent money to produce a series just to take the piss about it? Yeah smart move Nick. Should be a real winner, especially with 4Kids marketing it for ya.

It's more benign than you're thinking. Parody is probably too strong a word -- it's more homage than a parody that's meant to make fun of anime. It has a lot more in common with something like Hi Hi Puffy Amiyumi than anything else. It uses anime/Japan as its setting and purpose, but doesn't demean anyone. |

by way Kappa? doesn't that mean a water demon/sprite is japanese? so what does any of that have to do with a voice actor? bah. and why nick? are they trying to be like CN? ugh

Interesting. I remember a while back that a series with a storyline very similar to that one was going to be airing in one of the MTV channels. More than probably MTV2. So is it the same series that has now been picked up by Nick? I do not believe so too much since I think the MTV one was being aimed at adults.
That is truly funny. Considering their are many "anime-inspired" television series out there. Unless they mean that it's the only one based on Anime. Though I hardly doubt it. |

....by definition, it is not anime. Also, it is not the only anime-style US made series by a long shot. Anyone else remember Invasion America? That was about as blatently inspired by anime as you could get at the time, and it sure wasn't the last to try doing something in that style. |

Well, considering they're using the same dub studio, it probably wasn't that too big of a stretch. (Although one thing probably did lead to another) And remember, 4Kids is merely pitching the show and selling rights. They have nothing to do with the actual production phase, and for you uber-hardcore otaku, that oughta be fine. |

I was about to dismiss this show out of hand. But then I checked out the show's home page. It looks more like anime than any other "anime-inspired" show I've seen on US TV. Which isn't saying much, I guess...
Still, I think my wife and I will check it out. The concept looks pretty amusing. ------RM |

Dunno if its fair to say Nick's well known for not airing anime. Nick Jr. aired a lot of it back in the day.

I don't think Nickelodeon hates anime-they've got a couple of reasons why they don't air it. First and foremost is that CN beat them to it, and they tend to get first dibs on all the hot properties because they've shown they can make anime succeed on American TV. Nick's track record with anime is practically nonexsistant, and their sister network, MTV, completly botched their release of Heat Guy J. So anime companies are naturally going to go with CN, the network that has a proven reputation with anime. Besides, Nick is CN's main competetor, and most anime companies have a strong enough relationship with CN that they wouldn't want to upset them by selling shows to Nick. For example, if Viz gave Hikaru No Go to Nick, they might suddenly find that InuYasha and Naruto have mysteriously disapeared from CN's schedule.
Another factor is that Nick does buissness differentally than CN. Viacom, their parent company, wants to develop a stable of well-known animated characters to rival those of Warner Bros, CN's parent. WB owns a LOT of characters. Apart from all the original CN shows, they own the Looney Tunes, the entire Hanna-Barbera output, and the DC comics heroes, just for starters. Because Viacom wants to develop its own properties, they can't use anime-because no matter how popular an anime series on their network will be, it will always belong to someone else, and Nick will get a far smaller cut of DVD sales and other merchandise than they would if they owned the characters and series. That's why Nick has been trying to imitate anime with shows like Aavatar instead of just liscencing real anime. They want a piece of the market just as much as CN, but for the reasons listed (and others, I'm sure) it's just not as feasable for them as it is for CN. I've heard good things about this Kappa Mikey show. I'll give it a try before I pass judgement. |

It's funny how Nick would bill the show as the first anime-esque show in American, esp with the popularity of series like Teen Titans and Boondocks. Seems rather big-headed to me, but I'll give the show a shot first. |

I thought Kappa Mikey was a pretty obvious play on the sushi roll named kappamaki. A nice nod to the Japanese love for puns. Emerje |

Yeah, not to mention that they already have an animeesque show of their own that's been around for a year. Of course, it's a press release, so it's going to be insanely biased and stretch all truths to just shy of the breaking point. If they could get away with saying Kappa Mikey will cure cancer they would. |
