These guys definitely put a lot of love into this project, but I can't help but see it go the way of the Chrono Trigger Resurrection project:

That group was nailed with a Cease and Desist from Square Enix a couple years ago. I can understand where SE is coming from, having to protect intellectual property and whatnot.

Still, nice job to those involved with this.

This'll probably get nailed, and probably quick.
The reasons are that Square-Enix may have a tight hold of their properties and do not want anyone to take credit for their work.

As for the video itself, it is odd. Jumping was only possible when prompted. spoiler[Zach scene was weird.] Tifa was not in original party at first reactor, she was in sector seven. Where's everyone else?(Barret, Biggs, Wedge, and Jessie) The graphics look like early to mid PS2 graphics. Has this group even noticed the quality of the PS3 tech demo?

Wrong, wrong and super mega wrong things about this demo! Poor quality work, so not up to par with Squaresoft graphic details from their tech demo that is the bare minimum I expect from a Final Fantasy game and wrong choice of graphic engine version, low res graphics and next to no animation done right...too static and no feeling into the scenes. No ATMOSPHERE whatsoever in that video, bad gameplay and spell effects, and worst of all it does not respect the original story! Man, don't show me something to get my hopes up if it can't even get to par with Squaresoft developers right when i was thinking about a remake a few days ago! >.<

1/5 for this project. They really haven't captured the essence of what is Final Fantasy. The controls also look goofy, and unbearable. Beef the engine by 5 versions or so but at least if it had Unreal Engine 3 plus real talents in animation, modeling and coding then we talk.

In 2011 I expect state of the art from every points for a Final Fantasy 7 remake in pure true HD 1080p. Even Cryengine 3 is available for free for non-commercial use so why did they not even bother getting a better engine? >.<

uh wow was that battle sequence atrocious. I mean fire is just an explosion, and Tifa moves worse than she did in the original game. I also have to question why would you use a FPS engine in an RPG game it just looks bad.

Yea I agree with everyone. This just looks terrible. And the first person aspect is just so stupid. This is an RPG. If you wan't first person go play call of crap. I hope Square-Enix gets this shut down real quick cause this is just blasphemous to the FF franchise.

It just boggles the mind why Square won't remake this. Yeah, this was a crappy remake, but it shows the desire and demand is out there. Who here wouldn't pay $60 for a HD remake? Its easy money for Square. I just don't think that Square knows what they are doing anymore.

Hey, I'd pay 120$ for a true HD remake of FFVII regular edition and 150$ for a collector hands down without thinking twice!

About the remake it's simple, the current staff needs more guts and stamina but also real directors at the head of the project to endure and lead it to success for anywhere from 4 to 6 years of game development for a real FFVII remake to be true. My estimate would be that with a full staff of 250+ on the team with top notch skills and a really good pace it's what it will take. Towns will take a hella big chunk of time and redoing/rebuilding everything from scratch for today's state of the art graphics is mega huge! =p

Sure are a lot of haters in this thread. Cool

If Square were releasing this game, go ahead and trash talk all you want. This was made by fans who are trying to learn how to create a video game from scratch. I'm pretty sure they know just how unpolished it is.

The real crime is lack of jiggle physics on Tifa. Breasts don't work that way.

I'm not a hater but a critics playing the Final Fantasy franchise since FF II. It's just like they taunted me at the wrong time when we're talking non-stop about a FF remake that just happened to really look bad in and I'm still waiting for Square-Enix to fix FFXIV with 2.0. ;p

I say be patient. Square Enix will make a Final Fantasy VII remake eventually. But then again I'm not going to die if they don't. Versus XIII on the other hand...

I agree that it's not the greatest looking thing in the world, but more power to these guys for making an effort at all.

Still crossing my fingers that someday we'll get an official HD FF7, but ah well.

Man, it kind of reminded me of Metal Gear with the zoom. And by the way, didn't even Hideo Kojima tell Tetsuya Nomura to make a remake of the game? Laughing
Still, pretty cool.

All the power to these guys for working on a project like this to improve their skills all while showing their love for the game. Clearly there is no way this can stand against current gen games, each of which now employ thousands of workers and have multi-million dollar budgets. And clearly there is room for improvement. But I certainly appreciate their attempt. It's far better looking than 85~90% of mods I typically come across.

The models are obviously a bit stiff, and I have no idea why they made Cloud's hair glow at the end of the battle (do they really need to make the SSJ comparisons any more obvious?) And I almost started to scream at the player about how to perform a simple crouchjump. But I thought the mapping and attention to detail in that regard were pretty spectacular. It looks like an older engine and the detail can't match anything running on today's market, but for what it is I'm very impressed, and the mappers obviously put a lot of time and dedication into it. I really liked the environment.

In closing, I hope they keep at it and continue to improve upon their skillsets.

*Two Thumbs Up!* to above quote.

I'd say that while it was a valiant effort, it just doesn't draw the same reaction as the original Final Fantasy VII. Using an Unreal Engine is a bit dated, especially with the Unreal 2 Engine. The first person perspective is unusual, and personal preference would prefer a third person view.

Having the story changed is weird, as Tifa was not in the opening sequence. No animation to the combat scenes, but the music is at least on par.

Honestly, I was spoiled by the E-3 Tech Demo Square did for the PS3. That is kinda what I expect for a remake.
