Godzilla: King of the Monsters Film Wins HPA Award for Outstanding Sound

Pokémon Detective Pikachu, Alita: Battle Angel do not win for Outstanding Visual Effects

The Hollywood Professional Association revealed revealed the winners of this year's HPA Awards on Thursday. Legendary Pictures' Godzilla sequel film Godzilla: King of the Monsters won the Outstanding Sound awarad for feature films. Warner Bros.' Pokémon Detective Pikachu and Twentieth Century Fox's Alita: Battle Angel films were nominated for the Outstanding Visual Effects category for feature films, but The Lion King won the award.

Godzilla: King of the Monsters opened in the United States and Japan on May 31. The film opened at #1 at the box office in Japan. The film earned US$49 million in the United States in its opening weekend. The film was originally slated for March 22.

Kyle Chandler (Friday Night Lights, Super 8, Bloodline), Vera Farmiga (Up in the Air, The Conjuring, Bates Motel), and Millie Bobby Brown (Stranger Things) starred in the film as a father, mother, and daughter. Ken Watanabe (The Last Samurai, Letters from Iwo Jima, Inception) and Sally Hawkins (Paddington, Blue Jasmine) returned from the 2014 film.

Warner Bros. describes the film:

The new story follows the heroic efforts of the crypto-zoological agency Monarch as its members face off against a battery of god-sized monsters, including the mighty Godzilla, who collides with Mothra, Rodan, and his ultimate nemesis, the three-headed King Ghidorah. When these ancient super-species—thought to be mere myths—rise again, they all vie for supremacy, leaving humanity's very existence hanging in the balance.

Michael Dougherty (Krampus) directed the sequel, after co-writing the script with his Krampus writing partner Zach Shields. Dougherty previously led the writing room collaborators who brainstormed how to unite the current Godzilla and King Kong projects under Legendary's "MonsterVerse" franchise.

The film received a companion graphic novel on May 21 titled Godzilla: Aftershock.

The first of Legendary Pictures' Godzilla films premiered in 2014. The planned Godzilla vs. Kong crossover film from director Adam Wingard is slated for May 22, 2020.
