Anime Studios' Success Calculated Based on 10 Years of Disc Sales

posted on by Lynzee Loveridge

Director Hideaki Anno made news yesterday when he remarked in an interview that the current anime market in Japan wasn't sustainable, possibly collapsing as soon as five years from now. How much merit this idea has is up for debate, but there is some measurable data fans can look to for an idea of how the market is doing.

Hundreds of anime series are currently being produced each year with varying sales results. Fans compiled a list of the total number of series released from 2005 to 2014, organized them by animation studio, and then ranked them with a "success percentage" based on how many series created by a studio in that time span averaged at 3,000 discs sold or more.

The studios are ranked with the bottom 15 and top 10. The animation numbers do not include sub-contracting work.
