Ark IX (OAV) Decent Theme song covered by Morfonica. Looks like this is just a pilot or long ad. It introduces some characters in short scenes, but mostly it's a lot of unrelated action. It looks pretty cool though. There's obvious talent/budget. I'm not sure I'd watch an actual series. The main character doesn't seem very likeable, and his female sidekick too ready to become a distressed damsel to be saved or ignored housekeeper. The song does sound quite Morfonica, even aside from the violin.
Armitage III (OAV) Weak It's only from 1995, but it looks much older than that. Or am I mistaken? I thought animation was better than this back then.
Well, anyway, the art is okayish, although rather American-looking. Other aspects are only mediocre though. Voice-acting, character design and movement, story, they all lack grace, fluency. It's only four eps. long though, so I'll finish it anyway.
Armitage isn't such a great character. She's said to be a good detective, but we never see her do much sleuthing or other police work. She kicks ass a few times, but when she's not in control she screams like a little girl. Quite often she's also the helpless woman to be saved by big hunk of masculinity Ross. Bleh.
Armitage: Dual-Matrix (movie) So-so This is from 2002, and technically a lot better than the OVA. Not up to today's standards, but at least the art, animation, character design, etc. are decent. The resolution wasn't great, but that may have been the copy I saw.
Armitage is more like a ferocious mama bear in this movie. She still kicks ass, but is much more tenacious and less helpless than in the OVA. Ross is toned down to more human proportions and gets to be the strong daddy manipulated by the villain. Overall it still isn't great, but at least better than the OVA.
Arte (TV) Very good Not entirely sure about the historical setting and stuff, but apparently it's iyashikei.
Hmm, isn't it a bit easy to show a woman facing discrimination for her gender in Renaissance Italy? You can exaggerate or not and it'sall just 'ah, that was a longtime ago, we're much more civilized now' and that's that. It would have more impact if the setting was today's world.
What's with this dumb romance thing suddenly in ep.3? I'm not watching this anime for that kind of thing.
Ah, it was just those two eps., nothing more came of it. Did I miss something or was Darcia never properly introduced? The second half of the anime is nearly all about the Venezia story. It's nice, though I would've liked a bit more closure for Katarina (sp?) and her cooking ambitions. Ep.11 felt like it drew out something that took less space in the manga. Ep.12 felt like it dramatized things a bit for the finale.
Overall this was a really nice anime though. I'd like a second season, but I'm afraid the highlights have already been shown.
Aruvu Rezuru - Kikai Jikake no Yōsei-tachi (movie) Good A compressed pilot/first few eps. of a longer story. Pretty cool premise, but this pace doesn't do it justice.
Assault Lily Bouquet (TV) Decent Looks yuri, and it's from Bushiroad. OP is Raise-A-Suilen's "Sacred World" ^_^
Lol. With names like Yuyu, Riri and Yuri who are Lilies it's not really subtle about it, huh?
The first 6 eps. are basically introduction to the world and characters. As befitting an anime based on/advertising a mobage. The actual plot doesn't start until ep.7. New character Yuri is killed off for real apparently in ep.9. That was rather short :( Ep.10 is some aftermath/grieving, which leaves just 2 eps., not really enough to start something new I'm afraid. Oh, it's just finishing up the same plot thread with a bang.
Well, that was fun. Definitely very yuri. Not a very long or deep plot. Mostly it introduces the world and characters for the game. Too bad it doesn't have an English translation or I might check it out.
Asteroid in Love (TV) Excellent Astronomy club. And geology club. Combination astronomy club and geology club.
The 'in love'/'koisuru' part of the title looks promising, though I hope they don't forget about the astronomy (/geology) part either.
Aw, that was sweet. Not a lot of emphasis on the koisuru part, but there are a lot of low-key opportunities to imagine it. It's also decent on the science aspect. Not a lot of astronomy facts, but it shows some more practical aspects. And of course there's some earth sciences as well. Overall a very good anime.
Avenger (TV) Good The characters are very Bee Train (tormented fighter, emotionless girl, and the designs of course). Maybe it's because this is a short anime (only 13 eps.), but the scenes are all quite short. Just a few movements and lines before it cuts to a different angle, or a different setting altogether. I like this style so far. The robot dolls are cute too of course. This anime might be another favorite. I liked all of the Bee Train anime I've seen so far, so that wouldn't be too surprising.
Finished. The story leaves a lot for the viewer to fill in themselves, just like the animation. An unusual style, that works unexpectedly well. The good background music helps a lot. Ali Project may not be too good at doing theme songs, but they do BGM quite well here. I'd have liked to see Nei more involved in the story, and the flashbacks could have been indicated better, but overall this anime turned out good.
Ayakashi - Samurai Horror Tales (TV) Decent Three horror-themed stories. The first two were nicely animated, the third was an escapee from Mononoke (same protagonist and art style).
Azumanga Daioh (TV) Excellent It's a little different from Lucky Star, but just as much fun. My favorite characters would be, unsurprisingly, Sasaki, Osaka and Chiyo. I'd have liked to have more interaction between Kaorin and Sasaki of course, but Sasaki is also cute by herself or with Mayaa or other animals. Osaka is just hilarious, and Chiyo is also very cute.
Azumanga Daioh - The Very Short Movie Decent Short movie made before the TV series proper, which can be seen in the art style. It overlaps a little bit with some early eps., but mostly it's another of Osaka's weird daydreams about Chiyo. Not really great or important, except for completeness or something.
Baby Blue (movie) So-so Part of Genius Party. One of those slice-of-life things that's somewhat melancholy and ultimately rather pointless Some things happen, but without reason or consequences.
Bakuon!! (OAV) Oh, this one's an early OVA bundled with the manga. Then follows (remakes?) the TV series, then another manga-accompanying OVA 2016-12-20.
Yeah, just like One Off, this is basically a motorcycle commercial disguised as anime. Well, let's see if it's more than just that. Hmm, as was to be expected of an OVA, it's quite fanservicey. Also, some cool-looking but rather dumb antics. I hope the series is better.
Bamboo Blade (TV) Very good Mentioned in the SloL recommendation thread. So far it's okay. Funny at times, but more sports than slice-of-life.
The characters were deeper than I expected at first. I also liked that contrary to how it usually goes, the girls were the focus of the anime and the boys were only supporting characters. Overall, quite a nice anime.
Second time watching. In the preview for ep.19 they mentioned that the last arc was anime-original. It does feel a little different from the rest of the anime. By ep.23 it's kinda drama-overdose, then ep.24 resolves it completely, ep.25 is a very quick tournament to show some wins, and ep.26 is a flashforward. Overall this anime-original arc is kinda messy. I wonder if they got any input from the mangaka at all.
BanG Dream! (TV) Good Aka BanDori. The smapho game is pretty popular for its gay content, so let's see how the anime holds up. Oh, looks like there's going to be a second season early 2019. ONA1 (Pastel Life) has 6 eps. and has been subbed completely, while ONA2 (Pico) is still going and up to 20 eps. now, of which only 6 have been subbed (2018-11-15). The ONAs have 4min. eps. though, so they're probably not super important.
Well, let's see what it's like. Kasumi seems cutely overenthusiastic about everything, can't really tell what the others are like yet. I suppose that insert song was from one of the other bands from the game. "Glitter Green" doesn't sound like a great band name though. More like a magical girl name. The insert song and the ED didn't really grab me yet. Both K-On! and SB69 have much better songs. Whaa, ep.3 was embarrassing to watch ^_^;
So, overall it was quite nice. Pretty predictable most of the time, but nice nonetheless. I wish they'd picked some better songs though. Poppin' Party aren't bad, but the OP and ED aren't their best songs, and Roselia sound even better. I look forward to S2 next year. I wish I could play the game for the gayness (although it's probably pretty hard as a rhythm game (gacha too?)).
BanG Dream! (TV 2) Very good I usually like to avoid watching anime week by week because I hate having to wait a week each time, and trying to remember details and stuff that would be obvious if you watched eps. much closer together. I'm making an exception here because I'm currently playing the game pretty intensely and would like to keep up with new developments.
The full-CG takes a bit of getting used to. The movements are smoother than with 2D animation, but the framerate is kept the same, so that smooth movement kinda stutters and looks like slow motion, even though it's the same speed as always. Kinda hard to explain, but it takes a while to completely ignore it.
As for the story, the previews and key art indicated that this season is going to be focused on PoPiPa and Roselia (S1 was only PoPiPa, with practically nothing about the other bands). All five of the current bands appear and play a song, but it's really only those two that get attention outside of that (with at least ep.1 being mostly PoPiPa, but that might be to link it to S1 for those who don't play the game). Rokka of RAS also appears several times. She is clearly shown with a guitar backpack at the start, but doesn't appear to be part of a band yet. I get the feeling this season might end up being RAS's origin story.
Oh, forgot to update this for a while. S2 is finished now. In the end it was again nearly all PoPiPa, with the other bands at least appearing more than in S1. Each got a focus ep in the first half; the second half was Otae's story. Too bad they didn't complete RAS yet. I mean, how hard can it be for someone to put one guitarist looking for a band and one band looking for a guitarist together and get a complete RAS? Guess they're saving that for S3. That's been postponed to Winter 2020 though. I hope they're not waiting that long to add the band to the game. They're not shown on the poster for the movie either :(
Anyways, back to S2. It was really good. Much better than S1, though not perfect yet.
BanG Dream! (TV 3) Very good Oh, looks like it wasn't just the first ep. that streams early, but the first 5 eps.? That would put it nearly half the season ahead of the broadcast. Are they going to put the streaming on hold for five weeks after that, or just finish way earlier than the broadcast too? :?
Anyways, there still hasn't been any character who puts "band looking for a guitarist" and "guitarist looking for a band" together and comes up with a complete RAS. Instead Chuchu discovers Rokka through a vid of the school festival. Well, at least they got that over with in the first ep. It's weird how long it takes before RAS finally appear in complete lineup. The band was named 1½ year ago and the characters announced >1 year ago.
Another great season. Too bad PasuPare, Afterglow and HaroHapi didn't get much screentime at all. I guess it wouldn't be possible to fit all the developments around RAS and the competition in if they did that, but it's still disappointing. Next is S2 of Garupa Pico. I hope there'll be an S4.
BanG Dream! Episode of Roselia (movies) Excellent Hmm, yeah, this is nice. It's been a long time since the third season of BanDori. These movies basically cover the whole history of Roselia from their start up to a bit before the contest leading to Future World Fes, and then the rest of the time through the contest and until the end of FWF. Several of the Roselia events get covered, with added details of course. Lisa×Yukina and Ako×Rinko get plenty of love ♥. For Sayo it's only bits of her relationship with Hina though. I don't think we've had any real mention of Sayo×Tsugumi after Cooking Class Craziness.
BanG Dream! FILM LIVE (movie) Good This is basically a concert video. Aside from short bits of MCing once from each band, and a silent backstage segment before the encore, there are only songs. PoPiPa gets 3 (of 5) long version songs, Roselia 2 (of 4), and the others 1 (of 3). The ending theme (PoPiPa's Jumpin') is also a long version. The songs all appeared before in season 2, so there's really not much new here. Rokka and the members of RAS appear only in the backstage video.
BanG Dream! FILM LIVE 2nd Stage (movie) Very good Oh, it's finally appeared. Was it only a year? It feels like it took longer than that.
It's basically the same concept as the first Film Live movie, but better. The animation is a little more fluid in the MC parts, but there's also more variation in choreography. The audience is less visible than before though; it's only cylumes now. The idea of releasing the encores separately wasn't the greatest, but whatever. Another fun animated concert.
BanG Dream! Girls Band Party! Pico (ONA) Good Aka BanG Dream! ONA2. Still going as of 2018-11-24 (up to ep.21 now), with only 6 eps. subbed yet. Well, since there's no plot anyway, let's try watching whatever is available. It's pretty much the same as Pastel Life, except featuring PoPiPa, Roselia, Afterglow, PasuPare, and HaroHapi. I wonder if GuriGuri will show up later? It's also only 3 min. long now, so kinda hectic. It's fun to get to know the other bands a little though. In S1 of the anime it was only PoPiPa after all. Oh, I see; fansubs stopped because there's official subs. Well, I can catch up then.
Hmm, was ep.26 the last? It's hard to find confirmation, but it looks that way. Well, BanG Dream! S2 just started, so that makes sense. Anyways, like I said, it's nice to get to see the other bands outside the game, albeit SD. It's all very unserious, but fun.
BanG Dream! Girls Band Party!☆PICO ~OHMORI~ (ONA) Good More Garupa Pico. So far (ep.8) there's been no development from the first ep.'s plot.
Yeah, it's not until ep.25 (mostly ep.26) that the plot came back. In other words it wasn't a plot, only framing. Oh well, it's been fun at least. Not without some awkward/bad moments (Himari's dieting in ep.4, the fishing flag at the end of ep.20), but overall nice.
BanG Dream! It's MyGo!!!!! (TV) Very good Ooh, finally more BanDori anime. MyGO is kinda cute, though it feels like Tomori fits the same mold as Monica's Mashiro, smol dreamer. This anime really advances the timeline a lot, with most of the original bands having graduated. It's nice to see or hear some of them here and there.
So they really are making it a second generation of highschool BanDori instead of a college continuation. Well, MyGO is pretty good, and Ave Mujica awesome, so I guess I can live with it. That last ep. was definitely a sequel hook though, so hurry up Gen2 S2 plz.
BanG Dream! Morfonication (TV) Good Monica finally gets some anime time. They're the band with the least backstory, so it's good that they get this. Wish it were longer though.
Ooh, I like Mashiro's dream visions ^_^ Hmm, some of the expressions feel more like Popipa than Monica. Maybe it's because I'm used to only seeing Monica in the game so far? The story also feels a little like a repeat of earlier event stories. I dunno, on one hand Monica needs more backstory, and this seems to be from longer ago, on the other hand I also want to see new developments. Maybe this anime just needs to be longer. Yeah, that must be it.
BanG Dream! Poppin' Dream! (movie) Very good Ooh, it's PoPiPa! And RAS! And even Monica! The rest couldn't make it though.
Some silly antics, a bit of drama, and only the OP and ED were new songs. "Breakthrough" was presented as a new song, but wasn't of course. I liked how the usual chant before "Hell Or Hell" was integrated into the story, although the dramatic moment was drawn out a bit too long. I would've liked to see more of Monica. Even with the extra Morfonication eps. they're still far behind the others in story. Overall it was a nice movie though.
BanG Dream!: Asonjatta! (OAV) Good Huh, I guess ANN gave this OVA ep. a separate ANNcyclopedia entry. Kinda silly, it's clearly just a bonus ep.14 for S1. Nice to see more Roselia, although they don't quite feel the same as the game's Roselia. Character designs too. This came out after the game started though, even in English, so it shouldn't have been off-model.
Banner of the Stars (TV) Good See Crest Of The Stars.
Banner of the Stars II (TV) Good See Crest Of The Stars.
Banner of the Stars III (OAV) Good See Crest Of The Stars.
Bannō Yasai Ninninman (movie) Decent Is it me, or does the food trio look very American-style? Ninnin in particular looks like an orange Mask ripoff. Otherwise it's decent for such a short story.
Barakamon (TV) Good Slice of life. Interesting, but so far the "city boy taught by wise country folks" vibe is a little thick.
Some of the jokes fell flat a little, and there was a lot of "extreme reaction from Handa to funny behavior from someone else", which is a kind of joke that's only funny in small doses. The whole anime was from Handa's perspective, so we didn't get to know the other characters very well. Overall it was nice though. Not sure it's worth owning, but worth watching anyway.
Battle Angel (OAV) Weak Ah, an older anime. 90s-ish, I'd guess? Oh, 1993 even. That's pretty old indeed. The storytelling is a little clumsy, but that's probably because it's compressed from the manga.
Hmm, I think they compressed things a little too much. Gally & Yugo's relationship wasn't very convincing. Also, not only does this anime not pass the Bechdel Test (even Gally and Chiren's implied off-screen convo was about Yugo), both women with lines longer than "Aaaahh!" are pining over either a former lover or a current one. I didn't really like this one. Too compressed, too male-centric.
Battle Athletes (OAV) Weak Bleh, sports. I watched this short series because it was said to have some shoujo-ai. It does, but in the end it's once again not explicitly stated as lesbian love, but only as 'best friends'. Otherwise this anime isn't worth watching really, unless you like sports-themed anime. The backstory/science is crap anyway.
(The) Beast Player Erin (TV) Very good Looks like this'll be a nice and friendly story, suitable for kids, in an unsophisticated style. Erin has a cool mom.
Wow, dramatic plot twist in ep.6/7. I didn't see that coming. I hope Erin'll be okay.
A few times I felt that there was too much repetition/flashbacks/recaps, but overall this is a really superb anime.
Second time watching. Knowing what was coming, the plot twist in eps.6/7 was hinted at for several eps. Ep.13 is the first summary ep., framed as Nason reporting things (kinda creepy how he follows Erin). It's also the first (4-year) timeskip. Ep.30 is another summary and 4-year timeskip. After that it doesn't really skip anymore, just speeds up a bit until the final arc. The ending could've provided a little more resolution, but it's definitely not bad.
Bermuda Triangle: Colorful Pastrale (TV) Good Slice-of-life, except underwater. From the descriptions it sounds kinda like Non Non Biyori with a twist. The previews on ANN are unanimously lukewarm though. Plausibility doesn't seem to be a strong point at least.
Ah, so it's based on some Vanguard card set. That explains the many secondary characters and the unused plot details now and then. As an anime it's nice enough though. Not very deep, just fluffy colorful iyashikei.
Beyond (OAV) See Animatrix.
Binbō Shimai Monogatari (TV) Very good A short, but very sweet slice-of-life anime.
Bincho-tan (TV) Good Ah, so 'binchou-tan' is a type of charcoal. That explains some of the scenes in this anime.
Overall, a very moe, a little childish, and very sweet slice of life anime.
Birdy the Mighty Decode: The Cipher (OAV) Good Ah, so this is the interquel OVA ep.13.5. Well, it connects the two seasons a little more and gives some closure for Sayaka's story. Otherwise it's a bit random attacker-of-the-week.
Birdy the Mighty Decode:02 (TV) Very good The story continues. It's interesting to see more of Birdy's past. I hope they don't make her a distressed damsel later on though.
Whoa, the art quality in ep.7 suddenly took a dive into the basement. It's even worse than sketchy. And again in the final episode. If, like the latest Shelf Life said, it was done on purpose, then it missed its impact for me. It just looked like the animation budget was too tight. Pity, because otherwise this was definitely one of the better anime. It has really good balance between story and action.
Second time watching this. Well, I can see how the crappy art is in some ways a stylistic choice. It'd still have been better not to do that though. I'm not sure if ep.26 was also there when I watched this anime the first time. Or is that the interquel OVA? Should've put it at the beginning of set 2 then, Funimation.
Birdy the Mighty: Decode (TV) Very good A surprising good series, given the premise. It has a good balance between character interaction and action. Birdy's outfit is quite stripperific, but at least it's not given more attention than that. The ending is rather reset-ish, which is a little disappointing in Sayaka's case. I look forward to the second part of the series.
Second time watching. This really is a 'magical girlfriend' anime. And yeah, quite reset. That art quality going down thing happens here too, especially in the last few eps. for action scenes.
Black Fox (movie) Very good Looks interesting. Quite gay and actionful according to Andrea's tweets. Also apparently only a pilot.
Hey, that was pretty good. Indeed very actionful, and can be seen as pretty gay too. The ending quite clearly positions this movie as a pilot for something longer (TV series or more movies), though it can be watched stand-alone.
As a stand-alone movie the reveal of Melissa being #00 comes way too late. She hardly contributes during the final battle and could've just been left as an innocent friend character. Her reveal kinda begs the question of why she didn't help before, and whether Lily even knew about her.
As a pilot for a longer story this movie strangely cuts the number of bad guys in half by eliminating Lauren or at least Mia firmly distancing herself from him. Brad and co. seem quite capable of keeping up the bad guy end of the spectrum, but fewer characters means less opportunity to add some drama to a series that would otherwise just be action and intrigue. As is is none of the trio really have any worldly attachments other to their own group. A grudge against Gradsheim would be understandable as motivation, but they could be happy just putting that behind them, and Brad doesn't really need them either.
All in all in a meta sense it has some drawbacks, but on its own this movie is quite enjoyable.
Black Lagoon (TV) Very good I've been told it's good, and has strong female characters. Let's try the first season then.
So far, it's pretty good. Lots of action.
Despite all the action (hardly an episode goes by without a gunfight and explosions), this anime's story doesn't move very quickly. You could almost call it slice-of-life in that there doesn't seem to be an overarching plot (stories last a few eps. each, but don't connect to each other).
The women are indeed kick-ass. The usual point of view may be Rock's, but Revy is as much the main character as he is.
Black Lagoon: Roberta's Blood Trail (OAV) So-so Season 3 is a lot shorter than the first two, only 5 eps. At least the setting is Roanapur again. That last arc of S2 in Japan was not so great. On the other hand, there is a lot of philosophizing again :/
Hmm.. That was a weird story. Lots of people acting very out of character, and a meh ending.
Black Lagoon: The Second Barrage (TV) Good I don't know why this is considered a separate season. The episode numbers continue just the same, and there was even the usual preview at the end of ep.12.
This 'season' seems to have a rather more melancholy atmosphere than the first. The violence and killings are more graphic, and characters reflect upon their lives and world quite often as well. All that reflection slows down the action a lot though, so in the end I'd rate The Second Barrage slightly lower than the first Black Lagoon.
Black Magic M-66 (OAV) Good It's interesting to look for references or commonalities between different Shirow-based anime. The two M66 robots looked a little like the two cat women/robots from Dominion Tank Police, there was one officer who looked a little like GITS:SAC's Saito with his eyepatch, and at the end, Sybil was wearing a shirt with 'Appleseed' on it. I haven't seen that one yet. I think I'll add it to the to-watch list.
This OVA's age clearly shows of course, but it isn't bad for anime from 1987. Like DTP, there are silly moments, especially at the beginning. The rest of the story is more suspenseful, even though it isn't as dark as more modern anime would have been in that situation. Overall it's a nice 45 min. of entertainment.
Black Rock Shooter (OAV) Very good This anime is a little unusual. There are two stories going on it seems. One in which BRS fights against another woman, and one about the friendship between two girls. Mato resembles BRS, the other woman looks like Yomi. Only at the end of the story does Mato meet BRS and are the two stories connected (BRS was fighting against the jealousy that possessed her friend). BRS's fighting scenes are animated in a grungy, superflat style, the main story is animated in a regular modern style. I liked the friendship between Mato and Yomi, even though we never get to know Yomi very well. This anime is quite short though, so their story is like a summary, composed of short snippets. BRS's side is without speech, and only has action scenes. I would like to see more of this. It's called a pilot episode after all.
Black Rock Shooter (TV) Good I don't remember this story from the OVA. I wonder how they'll fit five characters into just eight eps. Hmm, it's a little confusing now what's going with Saya-sensei and Kohachi-senpai. Ep.6 and it hasn't gotten any clearer. I don't remember the OVA being this confusing.
Well, the last ep. made it only tiny bit clearer. I think I prefer the simpler story of the OVA (which was also more yuri IIRC). I must say though, the animation was very good, even if some shots were a little to quick to see without pausing.
Blood+ (TV) Good A good series, but it could've been better I think. Ostensibly, the main character is Saya, but I think the 'hero' of the story, Kai, actually got more plot time. That's my biggest disappointment actually, since he's one of those guys you dislike from the second he appears on screen (you can tell from his hair style that he's going to be a 'hero'). He becomes a little more likeable toward the end, but since the series is 50 eps. long, that takes a long time. Two other characters who are actually quite sympathetic are killed eventually; one in the first story arc, the other survives longer, but never gets to play much of a role other than emotional bait. As expected from the length of the series, the pacing is more deliberate than average, which I think is a good thing at first, but toward the end (during the fourth arc, when the eventual ending is made clear early on) I would've liked it to be faster. The ending is satisfying, even though it left me curious as to the characters' future.
Overall, I'd say it is an anime worth checking out.
Blood: The Last Vampire (movie) Decent Not bad. At first I thought I accidentally had a dubbed version because many characters speak English (albeit with a not quite natural intonation), but it turned out the setting is an American military base in Okinawa. The story is intriguing, but quite short, and it left me with unanswered questions. I'd say it is a nice intro for the Blood+ series, but on its own the lack of background isn't quite satisfying.
