There are ways to mitigate tree root damage without necessarily removing the whole tree. If that's possible, they should go for that. However, those trees in the picture look like a good wind storm will take them out anyway...
I'm also a little surprised at pushback over more cherry trees, since sakura blossoms are significant in the Free! canon. 
I imagine they'll find a compromise. Here, they'd just nod and smile and go ahead and do whatever they planned no matter what. |

If this year's set of typhoons to ravage Japan hasn't taken them down they might have weaken those trees root base so much that a heavy snow accumulation just might be the straw that breaks the camel's back so to speak. Anime is a set of stills flicked at 24 frames a second. Reality is changing constantly with no boundry of speed or time. Get over it.

Free! fans do realize that Iwami which is the town Free! took place in has changed since the anime first aired. A convenience store the characters frequented was knocked down and Iwami High School (aka Iwatobi High School) is getting demolished. In Sydney, the setting for the second ending song, the cafe one of the character's worked at was shut down. Things change, sorry fans.
