Not to mention the site went for over a day without getting any ad revenue, which must hurt.

If the site is running on linux, it's maybe not so difficult to set up an AWS account and write a cron script to backup daily. You just have to install s3cmd, then write a bash script that dumps the database and uploads the dump file and syncs the web directories to your s3 bucket, then set a cron job to run the script. It's maybe 20 lines of code, and AWS I don't think generally costs too much every month. And if there were just problems with the site and not the server, you can also make a cron script to make local backups on an hourly basis, so that restoring is a little easier. Though I guess it does depend on the setup and what was causing difficulties with the backup system in the first place, it must have been something major if it was only doable on a weekly basis.

Glad you guys are back up and running. This stuff just happens sometimes. I feel bad for the staff members who lost the stuff they worked on over the past week. That's never a good feeling.

ANN goes down a lot, I've noticed. Glad it's back up though.

I'm most worried about getting that peculiar message "checking your browser, cloudflare ddos protection", but i'm still able to access ANN without any problem after this downtime.
Oh well, things happen, so i guess it's okay.
Good job for restoring the site back on the line

Glad you are back up chorus... hopefully nothing important when to the aether...
But.
keep all eyes peeled for the other shoe dropping. THat has bitten me in the past when we recovered a server farm. Cascade failures suck.
Best luck to all the sleepless people.
And?
If'n you need to run another fundraiser for server/sites as in the past, I'm sure many will help.

Not that I really think about it that much, but I've noticed I can't get in due to maintenance or something, even for a couple minutes, maybe once a month or so??? It's really not that big a deal.

IIRC, there used to be job openings for FreeBSD admins, so they're probably still using that. The tools should still be similar, though.

While this does not really affect me, it especially sucks for the staff who lost part of their work. |
If it's long work, they probably saved in their own computers before sending into the site, so likely it's the myriad of mini-works that have to be redone.
Seems all posts between about Fri Feb 06, 2015 6:20 am and Sun Feb 15, 2015 8:17 pm are lost.

Glad to have you back, ANN. A shame about all that lost data, but I guess it can't be helped. I wonder what the cause was though.

I'm sorry you guys had such an awful weekend. Sad to see some of those discussions gone, but not much that can be done about it.
I'm happy to have the place back up though!

Well, I guess we're back!
A week worth of posts gone... I think actually I made a reasonable number. I guess this'll forever be ANN forums: the lost episodes.

Tony K. did try and warn us that over-quoting would spell disaster but we didn't listen, we just didn't understand. |
Didn't I?!
