Yup. This summarizes the bulk of shounen anime.

It's the other way around. If you do get it, you've watched enough.

Well......::hides all his DBZ vhs tapes:: I wouldn't know about that myself.
Am I the only one that thought of the older mentor janitor as an older version of the janitor from the show Scrubs?

This latest comic and forum discussion are both, hilarious. Keep up the good work Robin, as I will continue to read and enjoy it.

lol That's typical shonen fare alright.
I've seen so many shonen anime do exactly what was just shown to me. This was a funny comic.

Shonen Tournament manga /anime started with things like Dragonball Z, then gradually expanded to apply the exact same "tournament" formula to things like driving (Initial D), gaming (Hikaru no Go), more gaming (Yugioh), Cooking (Iron Wok Jan), more Cooking (Yakitate Japan), etc...
It's fairly common (ie: Generic) to have a young prodigy that is somehow better than he should be. Either because he's an alien (DB), he's been practicing all his life without realizing it (Initial D), etc...

LOL
It's so true. All hail the "power" of shonen storytelling!

I heard that in later episodes, Daisuke goes to study at "Gakuen Janitor" for some intense spot-cleaning of his skillz!

Oh, man. TOO FUNNY. It's official, shounen anime has officially jaded me. This should be an ongoing gag!

I don't believe so. Funny as it (and these forum posts) was, the joke would get stale fast.

When's Daisuke gonna go Super Sanitation-jin 3?
That comic was fun. At first it didn't click until the janitor started going on about how neatly he piled the sawdust. Keep up the great work!

Yakitate!! Japan gets lauded for epitomizing that very joke. You have to take the humor of shonen storytelling. It's already an ongoing gag itself when you start getting stuff like Dan Doh!!...implying not the premise by itself, but the horribly generic execution. I'm sure somebody could make a killer shonen golf series...or shonen janitor series, and not have it be so generically shonen in every facet.
