Except that's not why they changed the name, they changed it to avoid the folks who own the rights to Conan the Barbarian as Conan O'Brian can't copyright his own name and thus isn't a threat.

Just a nitpick: No one can copyright a name. The term/process is Trademark.

Copyright is for Media (Books, magazines, music, movies, programs)
Trademark is for Names, logos and other features that represent a company.
Patent is for Processes, devices and inventions.

Copyrights are implicit. Any creative content is automaticly copyrighted the instant it is created.

Trademarks and Patents must be applied for.

The three can sometimes be mixed. A company might create a show, to which they automaticly have a copyright, but they might also apply for trademarks for the show's logo and various designs inside the show.

Uhg, I must have been tired or something when I wrote that. I actually do know better, I visit the TARR website quite often.

Conan: What? How can you NOT like Case Closed? This show was originally called "Detective Conan", hey I like it! The FUNI thing about this show though - they changed its name to Case Closed to avoid me of all people from sueing them! Isnt that just WEIRD!?

Laugh.

I wonder if he was being stupid on purpose or if he really didn't know.

I finally took a look at tess (the trademark database) for Conan, and WOW I certainly don't blame FUNimation at all. Before I believed it might be possible for the owners of "Conan The Barbarian" to sue, but I said they probably wouldn't win. Having looked at tess, "Conan Properties Inc" would have won the case hands down. They own trademarks for "Conan" (not "Conan The Barbarian") for comics, animation, adventure shows, figurines and more...
