When I first watched it I regarded it as a very good, very well made adventure film. But I didn't perceive it as the classic held in such high regard like other Miyazaki films such as Nausicaa and Totoro, films which I found more impressive overall. Though its perhaps a matter of preferring epic sci fi (Nausicaa) or contemplative study of childhood (Totoro) over a straighforward adventure film like this. I think I should re-watch it at some point now that we have a blu ray of it though.

Cagliostro's story is something that a lot of people underestimate. There's actually quite a bit there, and in has the same themes that you'd expect from a Miyazaki movie, albeit much more subtly. I wrote a lengthy analysis of this film if anyone's interested.

Which dub does it come with? I watched the one with David Hayter(!) as Lupin.

Got this a few days ago, looking forward to watching it in HD for the first time. However, I wish the awesome art on the slipcover was on the case's cover as well, I always discard the slipcover so the BR fits with all the other BRs more naturally on the shelf but I don't want to lose such awesome art. I have the same issue with the Adventure Time BRs and their "face" slipcovers, it drives my OCD bonkers as neither option will ultimately satisfy me.

The original Japanese poster's not my top choice of all the case arts either, but that's just my own personal preference--There's principle at stake: If it's Discotek, EVERYTHING must be archival and in the tradition of the original Japanese release, or it just wouldn't be Discotek! |

It's supposed to have both the Streamline and Manga dubs; which one is better is up for debate, but I really had the (unrealistic) wish to have a third option that was as faithful to the original Japanese plot/names as the Manga dub without the pointless cussing added that detracts from it being a good family film. There used to be an amazing youtube video by "A Humble Professor" where this dude gushed about the movie for an hour and blew my mind. The biggest thing was how the castle's layout was clearly plotted so that all elements clearly connected, where you can see landmarks of other locations that are all properly placed relative to one another and it makes logical sense how characters get from place to place. That's something most live action flicks don't bother with. Hopefully he took it down to redo with better source materials and give it a coat of polish (it was his first video doing essentially a narrated power point presentation, and it shows.) I'd hate to think it was lost to a copyright strike, because I loved it. |

I have always loved this movie, but I think Miyazaki is a bit too liberal with the Lupin franchise personalities. If nothing else, Cagliostro's Fujiko is hardly a "femme fatale" and really more of a "mercernary woman". (considering one of her outfits is practically Victorian in design, I don't think you ever get the "seductive" aspect that is somewhat definitive in her character, it works well for Clarice, but Fujiko?) The characterization changes are hardly a major issue (especially if you're new to the Lupin franchise, in which case you won't notice them at all) but it is a quibble I have since I'm not fond of changing established characters because you don't like how they were initially defined.

And a third option, the cuss-free "Family friendly" edit of the Hayter Manga dub. Didn't know that existed, but nice to have. As for which is better, it's half and half: Streamline has a better and more sympathetic Zenigata, while Manga has the more accurate translation as well as the names. Good thing we have both/all three.
Mercenary, nothing, most first-time viewers think she's Lupin's resourceful secret agent pal from some unidentified free-lance intelligence organization. Especially when we first see her undercover spying on the count, then hang-gliding and motorcycling in camos, and then undercover as a news reporter again, and then spoiler[making off with the printing plates before Lupin can.] Even Miyazaki's Fujiko in the S2 "Albatross" TV episode is the cute and romantically-bantering Double-0-Fujiko who seems to be more interested in exposing the bad guy's plot than robbing him blind. Just more of Miyazaki's cleaning up that he didn't want "mean" versions of the Lupin gang in his stories, and I always thought it worked better, even if we get the more "cuddly" Lupin who always controls his hands around Clarisse, or a Jigen who spends more time napping than shooting. I really love this film, and the BD of this is absolutely phenomenal. The love and care put into it are obvious. The picture quality is, simply put, stunning. Miyazaki's debut film has never looked this good.
I'm accustomed to the Manga Entertainment version, even though I think it's a bit TOO extreme on the profanity side of things. I don't particularly like it for this film, but I can tolerate it because the performances, from Hayter as Lupin, Kirk Thornton as the Count, Bridget Hoffman as Fujiko, Ruby Marlowe as Clarisse, and the late Kevin Seymour as Zenigata all hold up well to my ears. The Streamline version, on the other hand, I've only heard clips of, so I can't really say for sure. I'm neutral about it so far, though; Mike McConnohie ties with Kirk as the Count, and I do like Jeff Winkless' take as Jodot, while Bob Bergen is on par with Hayter. But I'm not sold on the rest of the cast so far. It should also be noted that this older version is considerably talkier than the Manga version, arguably even more so than Disney's dubs of Kiki and Laputa. Not that it's a bad thing altogether; I quite enjoyed those two dubs quite unreservedly, it's just an observation is all. |

Really interesting analysis of the film and the franchise. I got curious about the other film as well, Mystery of Mamo. |

Mamo was made first, IIRC, on the first series and Punch manga, and though I only saw it once after Cagliostro, I remember it being.....really bad. A weird/confusing plot, ugly artwork, the "non-cuddly" genuine series characters, and a villain who looked like the love-child of Paul Williams and Simon Bar-Sinister. |

I want to clarify that the Family-Friendly edited Manga dub isn't "curse free" but rather severely "curse-reduced," as there are a couple of curse words that wouldn't edit out so cleanly and thus remained in the edit. But there's nothing particularly harsh left in. It's definitely more "PG" where it was "PG-13" originally.
People concerned about the missing "A Humble Professor" video can rest easy, as it is viewable at this URL: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I5wmuuXZ13E (complete with the breathlessly enthusiastic "your mind is about to be blown" moment wherein he says "Miyazaki did a pretty great job storyboarding this car chase"). THE MYSTERY OF MAMO indeed came first, releasing in December 1978, and THE CASTLE OF CAGLIOSTRO the December following. The gap in animation style and quality despite similar budgets is extremely apparent. |
