I'm kind of in the school of thought that a show should be at its best in the first episode or two, cos, you know, prospective fans watch that first. Of course, I also know that that doesn't always happen, e.g. Lucky Star.

after having heard the tumultuous uproar this series caused, i checked it out. I know it sounded bad, but i wasn't expecting THIS bad. I thought it would be sort like an awesome bad, i was completely taken off guard.
I could Handle the seires if all it was was the nudity and acid spewing nipples(lmao), but the plot is just absolute garbage, each scene solely exists for showing off each figurine or breasts. The whole thing is ridiculous, I've seen hentai with more convincing plots than this.

Given that you say you've watched hentai, I'm surprised you're as uptight about this as you are.
I've seen enough regular anime with less convincing plots than this.
I was actually pleasantly surprised, having had zero expectations for the plot beforehand - this being an adaptation of what is essentially a bunch of titillating artbooks.
And of course the series is going to show off their figures, that's kind of the point of an ecchi anime with a cast consisting mostly of impressively proportioned, sparsely attired women.

Won't someone please think of the boobs?!?!
Actually, staff critic Theron Martin has been enjoying Queen's Blade, I guess. He's mentioned it a few times.
Not going to apologize for shredding the first episode. It was awful, and gave me zero reason to watch more. Life is too short to say "Hm, maybe this ludicrous over-the-top bullcrap gets better if I watch another 5 hours' worth of it!" |
It all depends on expectations and what you want out of a show. I was fairly familiar with Queen's Blade before the show started, and it delivered exactly what I expected it would. I'm pretty sure it's one of those shows where you either adore it despise it with not a whole lot of middle ground, probably because it was always stretching fanservice and character designs to the extreme. I have no faith that it would get a DVD release here, but I'd support it. Then again, I was never really watching the show for whatever piss poor characterization or plot they could try to give it, so watching it raw was great.

You'd be surprised at the number of hentai with decent stories. Luckily it's not like real life porn where they can't act, I've heard Wakamoto and Kikuko Inoue in quite a few hentai. But then again, animated porn isn't for everyone. Queen's Blade probably should have been released on OVA to make it practically porn, but doing it in a TV series only makes it more scandalous.
As for the figurines, I'd say they come highly recommended. What I love most about Queen's Blade is that it's not more little girl fanservice. They might be impossible proportions for real women, but at least they look somewhat like mature women.

I have no problem with your reviews, I have a problem with people denouncing the series based off of your review of one episode.
This series is to stupid to be angry about, and frankly if it takes 4 years for a series to gain enough support to be succesful than the anime industry has nothing to worry about.

*sigh* You give cultural sensitivity a bad name by making statements like this, Shadowrun. It's one thing to be able to look at things from another perspective and be respectful, it's another to resort to total non-judgment on the grounds of moral relativism. |
Nice text book answer. *Sigh*? Please. How bout this...other countries have different rules. What is illegal in the U.S is not exactly illegal in Japan.Try importing a car from Japan. They gotta dumb that shit down here.Age of consent is super young.Their workweek is a lot longer than ours. The list can go on forever. When people mention stupid shit like "it happens to be bad for the industry in the long run on top of being wrong." Wrong? Adults watching adult animation is wrong? I'll be damned. It green-lit another season, how is that bad for the industry?
Because he don't like it? BS

Everything they produced for Strike Witches sells well/out.There is also second season on the way.
I would also have to say "current mainstream" since I don't include the shonen juggernauts that all technically started 7 to 10 years prior. They had their train time to build up to that size.Besides,I'd need a time machine to go back to when it first came out to show you when it was number one.I also don't play your silly "prove me wrong" text games.Sorry. Maybe later.

Have you seen the sale charts that are posted on ANN. Strike Witches is the biggest hit Gonzo has had since VanDread. |
reanimator wasn't paying attention when ANN posted it several times.I don't play the "look up the past" game for other people.I was there,I speak from experience.Season 2 and a Nintendo DS game were on their way last I remember.

Maybe a third season?

You judge by the cover? Nice stereotype. You'll miss a lot of good anime doing that.

Obviously they're not going to to use the newest anime titles that we English speakers are illegally viewing through downloading.Man. Nice sarcasm though.Har.

Oh, I apologize for being on topic |
Right on,I completely understand.I can't wait to see what Menace (my favorite character) does in episode 12. There also looks to be a good doppelganger battle ahead.

The first episode was ridiculous, but you are Zac.The guy that ditched YuYu Hakusho to go watch a Pixar movie.I'll agree that the first episode was crap.

Media Blasters would be the only ones who would, except for maybe Rightstuf, but I doubt they would.

Or maybe we watched it ourselves and decided it was complete shit. I knew very well going in that it was going to be ridiculous fanservice, and I was looking forward to it, but when I watched it, the animation quality was horrible, the fanservice was unappealing, the plot was expectedly dull, and there was no humor (aside from the OMG acid-spewing nipples LOL type incidents, and that's not so much humor as absurdity).

if Ah, My Buddha is any indication, MB may have the highest chance.
Still, I wouldn't be surprised to see this licensed over here, either my MB, Nozomi, or even Funi (they tend to get some surprising series here and there).
Season 2 needs some more Nyx and Ymir (some people find her annoying, but I like her) as well. Here's hoping for the best.

So is there some drastic change in the style, tone, or quality of the series from the first episode to the last? If it does change, how long does it take? If we watched the first episode or two and found it unbearable, we have given it a chance, and found we could endure no more. That is not judging a book be its cover, that is judging a book by the first few chapters, and Queen's Blade makes it clear from the outset what it intends to be. No need to get sanctimonious defending such low-brow fare.
