I'm very curious about this. I do hope it's set in-universe and not another Doremi situation. I would love to see the characters as adults
They've already done that plenty of times, though. You should follow some of the animators and directors on social media and see their comments on designing the characters or framing certain shots. Some even post art they draw themselves. . Plus, they've put out official cast-off figures of the characters. It's not exactly something Precure has ever shied away from |

"Toei would never make dark and/or sexy version of their kids franchises"
Toei themselves: Amazons, Shin Kamen Rider, Black Sun, etc. And who can forget Super Sentai's various SEXY VIOLENCE ACTION ENTERTAINMENT spin offs. I refuse to believe anyone who's been a fan of Digimon, Sentai, Rider, or Precure for more than a year finds this surprising. Like, you know any toku project directed by Koichi Sakamoto is going to have his typical fetish stuff inserted into it. Heck, they make official Precure dakis for crying out loud. spoiler[I would know because I have a Akira + Yukari one...] It's just finally time for Precure to go the route of the other Toei series have over the past decade. |

Wow, one comment and my excitement turned to dread. That all sounds terrible. Though I’m guessing (hope) that these new shows are experiments to test how well received follow up content will be amongst that particular season’s fans, hence ‘aimed at adults’ since they were the children that originally watched YP5 and Maho Girls. And I doubt Toei looked at all those crappy edge fest magical girls shows that tried to ride Madoka’s coattails and thought “Yes, this is what we want to do.” |

Kinda of a bit grumpy that aren't getting Doremi 16 animated. Though I'm excited to see how this goes anyway, despite not being a precure fan.

This was pretty shocking news.
Yes! for nostalgia caught me off-guard but it makes sense: they know it's popular since it revitalized the franchise and set it as a permanent staple, it has a larger cast than Futari Wa, more juice due to the unresolved NozoCoco relationship and it's more different to modern series than Heartcatch. It's just ironic that they handed this to the series that made them give up on sequels As for Mahoutsukai, that one is definitely aimed at those who watched it as adults, 6 years is not enough for their main target audience to grow up. It being confirmed as a 12 episode direct sequel also checks out, and thematically it fits with the characters aging up during transformations and in the epilogue (... I think? Their design differences were hard to quantify). What I don't understand is why this series specifically. Was it more popular? Or is it because they mostly get to keep superpowers/magic after the main plot? Do they want to explore some specific part of it? |

Eeeh it's not something to entirely dismiss. Like Yuvelir mentioned, not enough time for main target audience to have grown up in 6 years which actually lines up perfectly with the nhk polls that had a majority adult viewerbase for mahoutsukai. Maybe if the poll was conducted by Asahi themselves you would have taken it for granted but this ones currently the only metric we have. |

Yeah I don't think Koichi Sakamoto is going to be directing this. A wild speculation, I know lmao
But anywho, I'm expecting something more in line with either Looking For Magical Doremi or the Sentai/Rider 10 Years After specials. If they actually go the late night otaku anime route I'll be laughing my ass off for days on end, but I don't really see them doing that. |

I'd say even late night otaku anime don't need to be unsafe.
I dearly remember Houkago no Pleiades as a late night mahou shoujo show whose gravest sin was putting the cast in swimsuits once. |

To be fair something like that might be enough to upset some people. Tokime had her detractors when Fuuto PI was airing despite her fanservice only be a little bit of breast focus. Perhaps it was just general anti-fanservice people complaining, but I feel like some people just dislike any kind of 'adulting' of a kids franchise. Although I would say Japanese kid shows tend to do that already by western standards. Precure has already has fanservice, violence, and other stuff in it that would never fly in American kids shows. I remember when Doki Doki! Precure's film showed Mana being mauled by a giant beast and showed her bleeding out from her wound. Would something like that being more common be considered too edgy for people? If these 'adult' series just means the characters can bleed more often, deal with adult themes, and have more fanservice then I don't see the big deal. I doubt they're going to go full gory 80s OVA or anything so I don't think people have to be worried about that, but if Toei's attempts at dipping Sentai and Rider's toes into the adult market are anything to go by then I'm on board. Akibaranger was super fun, afterall, and I could see a Precure series done in that style. For sequel series, the Kiramager Yodonna specials have also been amazing with the latest one even having a full on lesbian kiss between the two leads so maybe we'll finally get see some actual yuri in a Precure series for a change which would be nice. |

In recent years Precure has put the girls in swimsuits several times so it isn't exactly uncharted territory. Not like they need to anyway, I was just pointing out that there are not just otaku shows but otaku mahou shoujo shows that are pretty much as clean as Precure. Other than that, you can't really appease outrage culture so there's no point in being too wary. |

Personally speaking, I was never a fan of sequels that depict established characters all aged up. 9 times out of 10, the studios do a horrible job. They fail to understand why fans were attracted to the original characters to begin with, and they make the adult versions too different from their original iterations. This dissonance is only exacerbated if the sequel series takes place after a huge time skip, as there is nothing in between to flesh out, justify, and acclimatize fans to the change in their characterizations. In that case, they might as well be different people. But of course, the studios won't be able to leverage the collective nostalgia of fans otherwise.

If by 'grown-ups' they are referring to the original audience? Certainly odd choices.
