I'm sorry for resurrecting this forum thread, especially when it's likely no one will read this, but I have to get this off my chest somewhere:
I finally got around to reading Viz's translation of Ooku (I'd read it in Japanese) and IT IS AWFUL. The terrible pseudo-Shakespearean style is just plain unreadable, and isn't even reflective of the style of Japanese being used, since it never varies from formal to informal. I managed to get ten pages into this series, which I loved in Japanese, before feeling sick to my stomach. Shame on you, Viz, this is a HORRIBLE, pretentious "translation." I'm going to go back to reading the Japanese until you come up with something that isn't crap.

I agree with you. I ordered this manga with high hopes, and everything dissapointed me: the dialog was stilted, the art seemed cut off and the plot in the first half does not carry over to the rest of the series, so it's just an introduction of sorts.
I'm willing to give it a second volume try to see if at least the plot picks up, but, boy, is that dialog hard to get through! Too bad I don't read Japanese at all (yet, anyway). |
