To show better emotion and the influence of disney on early anime.( if your new to anime you should get the books Samurai from Outer Space and Anime Essentials, they're really good.)

Its easier to show expressions that way, even Disney knows that.

I find it a disturbing trend that alot of real Asian Americans are getting eye surgery to be less "chinky". I think they are fine just the way they are. I don't know how it is overseas, but I guess I would find it disturbing there as well.

Don't forget that some American cartoons are using the big-eye style to express the chracters too. Boondocks and the Power Puff Girls two name some more popular ones. I figure the artists must have seen the advantages of of being able to manipualte the eyes for whatever emotion they were trying to get across.
