Episode 5
Standard marooned story, but with a space twist that I am having trouble recalling from something else. I am enjoying the series more now, I could even forgive the recap since it was cool. The history lesson was appreciated as I don't recall actually finding out why they are out in the first place. And seems that a number of characters are from the original humans that left Earth, the bear possibly a brain transplant into a robot.
The rescue was cool, super respect for them now. But something is nagging me, it is the girl, I think that there have been a number of death flags, and watching the preview where they look happy, yeah she is going to die.
She was probably onto something, the Gauna probably think in a totally different way where they perceive absorbing people to be a good thing. And she really embarrassed about him drinking her filtered urine? They probably have been drinking filtered urine their entire life. Blushing cute though, for what it is worth.

Do I understand correctly that joining a bunch of those things together gets better gas mileage? And if so, why?

The music matched perfectly in the latest episode. And desperate calls for desperate measures in space...

Unless you are Bear Grylls. I bet I could work that in somehow with the bear person?

Is the story in the anime the same as the manga?

Based on the material yes.
Anyways, I enjoyed the latest episode for its balance of grim moments and comedy. I think the comedy came from the little love rivalry at the oceanic exploration involving Nagate. The grim part was near the ending as it seems like Shizuka is dead based on the news. Wow. I was not expecting that.

If you mean it follows it panel for panel, I'm not sure it does. I think I read somewhere that it has snipped a few things to streamline it a bit. I think I read that the original "ocean" visit with Akai's squad was longer in the manga.

I've seen a few episodes and read some of the manga. Now I'm trying to decide witch one to stick with.

That's always a tough choice. There's been 8 volumes released in the USA by Vertical with another 3 more due out this year. Meanwhile the anime is currently slated for 12 episodes. I expect that unless the anime completely bombs that they will release another 12 like in the fall. 11 volumes plus its still ongoing in Japan. I'm not sure they are going to be able to cover it all given the episode count. If it was me I'd probably watch the anime first, because I expect there to be more detail in the manga. After the anime is over if I liked it enough then I'd pick up the manga which might feel fresher because of added detail that wasn't in the anime. But that's me. If I like the anime I'll hold off on picking up the manga till next year.
Plus its Nihei Tsutomu, if its like any of his other works (Blame!, Abara, Biomega, etc) then there's probably a ton of scenery porn that we are not getting in the anime. I think the guy was studying to be an architect at some point and he tends to go wild with buildings and structures, so you would probably get a lot of that in the manga.

Hehe, the manga version actually lacks some of the details anime added to decrease the incoherence of the original work. The characterization, pacing and action scones all work better in this adaptation. And yeah, seeing the length of this work they will certainly leave out a lot of material, but based on pre-orders people can tell that anime will be a financial success(so we can expect second season to pop up someday).I wouldn't expect Knights of Sidonia to be a split cours though,Polygon studio is now working with Ghibli on that new show,so they probably don't want to overwork themselves.

I skimmed the manga and they did not skip the battle like the anime did. I hope they show it next week. And last week preview pretty much told us that Hoshizora was going to be killed.
