Anyone know if this will ever be released in Blu-Ray?

Oh color me surprised. Rolling Eyes

The review says "Violet Evergarden is certainly not a perfect show" and then goes on to give a raving review of straight As. It's utterly laughable.
The animation and art certainly merit an A/A+ but the story an A as well ? Lol lol lol.
Violet Evergarden is the epitome of a tearjerker anime without substance. It's emotional porn done wrong.

I liked this show well enough, but I'd rather have the LN. It's only 2 volumes, after all.

The beginning was rather weak, I nearly dropped the show after 2 or 3 episodes. The ending wasn't my favorite, either, but the middle was great, I'd recommend it to anyone who likes emotional stories.

I'm not sure it has been mentioned here before, but to me, Violet feels like she's written as an (pseudo/fantasy-version of an) autistic person. Whether she was intentionally, knowingly written like that, or not.
Especially the parts about her feeling emotions, but not quite understanding what they mean. Her emotions obviously exist, and are rather complex, but for the longest time, she doesn't really understand what they are, mean, or where they're coming from.

I enjoyed the show, loved the throw-back feeling to a Masterpiece Theater period kind of drama. But it is a mixed bag, though I'd say the good outweighs the bad.

Many of the individual letter-focused episodes and stories about other people are the highlights. Some excellent stuff!

But then there's the main overarching story of Violet, and that has its highs and lows. A lot of stuff does come off as overly hammy, though hat might just be the dub? That's what I watched.

There's also the kind of world inconsistencies that bug me - like her mechanical hands - we see no other people with it. Aren't there other veterans who needed amputation and required parts? Couldn't that girl's brother with the injured leg use some kind of mechanical aid? Are these prohibitively expensive for some reason and Violet only got them by virtue of her wealthy adoptive family? And you'd think the military would capitalize on this technology in some way... maybe this is explored in the future LNs and a potential second season?

But overall, I do love the show. The animation is beautiful. It avoids many things that have typically felt cliche in anime... but then goes for cliches in western dramas instead, but I still appreciate the change.

I'd recommend it to anyone. Hope there's more and hope there's a blu-ray release when it's all said and done. And if there's another season the writing needs to be tightened up. But I hope they complete the story given there is more.

One thing I'm interested in seeing is that since this is essentially a Netflix show, will Violet Evergarden will be one of the most accessible KyoAni title for curiously casual viewers beyond hardcore anime fans? And also what kind of staying power this show will have in say 5 years from now?

I think that Clannad might be the most "accessible" KyoAni title. I think so because it's rather simple and striaghfoward melodramatic romance. It's true that Violet Evergarden is also more accessible than stuff like Hyoka, Kobayashi's Dragon Maid and K-On! which are perhaps among the purest "hardcore anime fan" material. Still Violet Evergarden is very animeish with stuff like little girl acting like a commando and having two mechanical arms for a main character.

I don't think it will be remembered a lot because KyoAni made better stuff last year with Kobayashi's Dragon Maid and A Silent Voice in 2016. As well considering a lot of heavy weight masterpieces in the last few seasons such as Girls Last Tour, Houseki no Kuni and Made in Abyss. Since we are in a golden age of anime the number of great shows is so large that only the absolutely greatest titles will be remembered. I guess in 10 years only Made in Abyss will be well remembered.
