posted on by Kim Morrissy
Sentai Filmworks commemorated the 50th anniversary of the Lupin III Part 1 anime with a roundtable discussion about the history and cultural significance of the series. Animation critic and historian Charles Solomon and Japanamerica author Roland Kelts participated in the discussion hosted on Sentai's YouTube channel.
The anime has been celebrating its 50th anniversary with a variety of campaigns. A number of high-profile creators and celebrities, including Detective Conan manga creator Gōshō Aoyama, left tribute messages about the series.
TMS Entertainment delayed its planned world premiere of the English-dubbed first episode of Lupin III Part 1 on Sunday. The episode was scheduled to debut on TMS Entertainment's YouTube channel on October 24 at 12:00 p.m. EDT, the 50th anniversary of the first episode's original airdate in Japan. Richard Epcar, director of the English dub and the voice of Jigen, was planning to host the screening. TMS Entertainment will reschedule the event, and will announce further details at a later date.
TMS is also screening the first episode's English dub along with the first two episodes of the Lupin the 3rd Part 6 television anime series in Japanese with English subtitles from October 24-28 in select U.S. theaters.
The Lupin the 3rd Part 6 television anime series premiered on the NTV channel in Japan on October 9, and it is also running on NTV's affiliates as well as on Hulu and other streaming services in Japan. The new season commemorates the original anime's 50th anniversary.
