OceanVeil announced on Sunday that it is streaming The Winter Cicada (Fuyu no Semi) anime based on Youka Nitta's Embracing Love manga.

OceanVeil describes the anime:

A sweeping tale of love and loss, it unfolds against the backdrop of Japan's turbulent transition from isolation to modernization, beginning in 1862 with the Expulsion of Foreigners movement. At its heart lies the story of Touma Kusaka, a visionary of the Choshu clan who dreams of opening Japan to the world, and Keiichirou Akizuki, a samurai of the Bakufu whose fate becomes inextricably bound to his.

Their bond, first kindled through secret English lessons, deepens into a forbidden romance—tenderly consummated before Kusaka's departure to London. When he returns, now an officer of the Imperial Army, he finds himself on the opposite side of the battlefield from Akizuki, who has risen to lead his clan within the Shogunate.

As the Boshin War rages and loyalties divide, their love is tested by duty, honor, and betrayal, carrying them from moments of desperate reunion to the quiet tragedy of their final days in a rapidly changing Tokyo. The intimate and epic, The Winter Cicada is a riveting Boys' Love story that showcases sacrifice and the fragile beauty of human connection from a historical perspective.

The three-part OVA debuted on DVD in February 2007.

Nitta's original Embracing Love (Haru o Daiteita) erotic boys-love manga ran from 1999 to 2009. The manga also also inspired the Embracing Love: Cherished Spring OVA. Media Blasters released the OVAs on home video. Nitta also published an Embracing Love side story titled Time Share in Be-Boy Gold's February 2013 issue. Central Park Media released early volumes of the series from 2005 to 2007, and JManga released the manga digitally in English in 2011 before closing its doors in 2013. Viz Media's SuBLime imprint currently publishes the original Embracing Love manga in North America in omnibus form.
