Nintendo updated its top-selling software and hardware sales units information on Tuesday to be current up through December 31, 2016. In the reports, the company revealed that the Pokémon Sun and Pokémon Moon games have sold 14.69 million units worldwide since their launch on November 18. The games have sold 3.81 million units in Japan and 10.88 million outside of Japan.
Nintendo attributed part of the games' success to the popularity of the Pokémon Go smartphone app, which launched in July. In its financial forecast, Nintendo revealed plans "maintain the buzz" around its popular 3DS games, including Pokemon Sun, Pokemon Moon, Super Mario Maker for Nintendo 3DS. For the nine months ending in on December 31, the company saw a 10% year-on-year increase in 3DS hardware sales and a 20% year-on-year increase in 3DS software sales.
