that is why it's just Modaka when I explain it. but anyways this weeks comic made me laugh. I have had this problem with show titles more then once. |

xxxHolic is the title I tend to have trouble explaining the most, at least when people actually look at the title. I've gotten a lot of comments and was asked if it was porn because of the "xxx" part. Which then I had to explain most of the series before people got it. XP

xxxHolic and Kiddy Grade are tough to explain. Fate/Stay Night and Ah My Goddess have that "that's... porn, right?" sound to them as well. (At least among shows you might actually show to someone unfamiliar with anime. "Yamada's First Time" certainly does, but who would use that as a gateway drug?)
(Props to "psychic squad" for avoiding the "kiddy grade" thing.) My "favorite" English re-titling choice has to be "the title is confusing, let's name it after the closing song, instead"... because "Rumbling Hearts" is so much better than "The Eternity You Desire". Fortunately, my usual loaner shows don't have the issue (Mushi-shi, Haibane Renmei, Noir, Full Metal Panic.) |

I seem to recall hearing that the xxx is actually supposed to be silent, leaving it pronounced simply as "holic" which makes a fair amount of sense when you consider the series. (Think "-holic", as in "alcoholic", "chocoholic", etc.) |

Right. "xxxHolic" is just pronounced "holic" - the triple-x indicates a blank, not, you know, what it means in English.
A similar example would be the Gurren Lagann instrumentals "Omae no XXX de Ten wo Tsuke!" and "Omae no XXX de..." I translate them as "Pierce the Heavens with Your...!" and "With Your..." |

and ---It's not just the titles. Try explaining the plot of any Gundam series to someone while using the character's names. |

Hmm, let me try it. I'll use the second season of Gundam 00 as an example: spoiler["In season two of Gundam 00, the Innovators - rogue innovades under the leadership of Ribbons Almark and his deputy Regene Regetta - make a power grab to rule the world. The Innovators Revive Revival, Hiling Care, Devine Nova and Bring Stabity all pilot powerful mobile suits in the fight against their enemy Celestial Being, whose pilots include Allelujah Haptism and Lockon Stratos. To make matters worse for the Gundam pilots, the A-LAWS military force (which include the powerful Mister Bushido) was created by human puppets of the Innovators to harass Celestial Being. However, all this military might was almost not required when Innovator spy Anew Returner successfully infiltrated Celestial Being. In the final battle and with many of the Innovators killed in action, Ribbons turns to the Gaga Forces in order to crush the human rebellion, but he ultimately is betrayed by Regene and killed in a duel on the Moon's surface."] Oh my goodness, that's truly awful. Whoever came up with the names must have been on one impressive acid trip at the time. |

I guess it is like trying to tell people that Squid Girl good, people have the worst original opinions of anime mixing girls with animals, especially with the tenticle thing.
Also had some trouble convincing my conveying my brother that Yuru Yuri is not some full on yuri fest with no redeemable qualities thanks to the title. And I guess people expect ham from titles like Heroman and Bodacious Space Pirates. |

Wow, just reading some of the posts on which titles people find strange has made me realize how desensitized (There is probably a better word for it than this) or normalized I am to the names of Japanese titles. I too have problems recommending titles to people, but I am also terrible at explaining anything.

I totally had the hardest time to get people to watch Tiger & Bunny and this was people in my anime club. I managed to convince one guy and he got everyone else to watch it.

Letter Bee has some weird names like Largo Lloyd and Jiggy Pepper, but they're not as bad as those in Gundam 00. Devine Nova and Bring Stabity are cringe-inducing enough, but my eyebrows practically flew off my face with Gaga Forces; what the bloody eff? (To be fair it is the name of a group rather than an individual, but still . . .) |
