I'm guessing it's for a reason that isn't visual, one that wouldn't be apparent to someone who can only see and hear Kakashi. Maybe he's got germophobia? Or really bad breath? Or easily chapped lips. Mask might be charcoal infused or aloe coated or full of hyeluronic (sp?) acid for keeping his face nice and youthful.

I bet it was the same thing with Dr. Doom. He get's a little mole and he overreacts thinking he's scarred for life.
I bet the reason he hides under the face-mask is because he was picked on as a younger Kakashi and was ashamed of that mole. He wore the mask and was then considered a cool kid. |
