Just finished A Place Further than the Universe. It's not really my type of show so I had very little expectations going in. Perhaps that helped as I found myself really enjoying it! I found Mari's struggles to be somewhat relatable to my own life. Trying new things and changing the status quo have always scared me, although in my case, I'm quite comfortable with that and have no real desire to change (for better or for worse), so her story will ultimately not resonate with me quite as much. That aside, it is still a good, well-executed story and I'm interested to see how far they get in their journey. I'm still not sure that I'll end up continuing with this as it will depend on how the rest of the season shapes up, but this was a good start to Winter. I'll give it a 4/5.

Questions:
Does Ms. Silverman or Ct. Silverman have the better taste in music?
Will TRIGGER or its concert routines be animated in the style of Studio TRIGGER, and, if yes, going-crazy-TRIGGER (KlK, LWA) or we-used-all-the-money-from-this-show-to-subsidize-our-other-show (Inferno Cop, Ninja Slayer)?

It's wonderful to learn this anime has a wonderful start to it as this is one of the shows I was planning to check out this season.

Quote:
The episode is largely shown from Mari's point of view. She's a believable kind of emotional mess, prone to extreme emotions and simultaneously upset by her anxiety and kind of grateful for it since it gives her an excuse not to do scary things, even if she's then upset by the fact that she can't do them. (In other words, a seventeen-year-old just figuring herself out.)

From what I read it seems that her anxiety has left her feeling stagnated by her life. As a person I watch on youtube mention in a series he is working on stagnation happens to those who are not driven to succeed and are too afraid to fail. I'm looking forward to seeing her overcome this issue, but what really got me wanting to watch this anime even more is to see if Shirase would be able to find her lost mom (which by the way, thanks Ms. Silverman for putting a damper on that hope). Up until now I have not check out the trailers for the anime, so I didn't know what the story was going to be about in detail. I only knew it was about a couple of girls taking a trip to Antarctica and the character designs looked cute. This, along with Mari dilemma, does put a more serious tone to the story, which I like, and it tells that this is going to be more then just a cute slice of life adventure.

This anime is going in with a purpose.

As for IDOLiSH7, I was not planning to watch it being that I had yet to watch any anime that is focus on idols, and honestly I am more interested in watching idol shows staring females then males. With that said however, after reading the summery and the reviews of the first two episodes this show does seem like it’s okay enough to give it a watch (plus the protagonist looks attractively beautiful to me). On another note I didn’t know the character designs were suppose to be base on Arina (which I also didn’t know that she also draws character designs for games). I can see what Mr. Martin is coming from as the character designs look nothing like her style at all (unless it evolved since I last saw her illustrations as it has been a long time since I read Arina works).

With the likes of Yuricamp yet to join A Place Further than the Universe, my persisting appetite for slices of life is almost spoiled for choice.

What no critique of Overlord II's first episode...twas a special official screening.

Bloated exposition/recap heavy first episode, featuring three(well four) characters the should not to be seen again this season lol.

Hey, I could be wrong! In fact I hope I am - I'd love for her to have just been hanging out with the penguins for all this time.

On a different note, I was also surprised that Arina Tanemura was the character designer for IDOLiSH - but I've never been happy with how her art translates into anime.

This is one of the great questions of the Silverman Household. More perplexing is the question of why that particular cat was watching with me - usually a different one is my anime watching companion.

I'm a little saddened, though ultimately not surprised, at the slightly lower scores i7 got. I'm really not into idols on the whole, but the mobile game story REALLY hooked me once it picks up; I'd definitely recommend it.

As for the character designs, Arina basically created them, but they were further refined by Kasumi Fukagawa. It's ultimately her designs that the anime is based off of.

No. Unless Netflix decides to change their tune and simulcast it in North America.

A Place Further than the Universe started off fairly strong, IMO. Good intro episode. Some odd music decisions (Drums in a more classical track...) but other all very good. Decent pace, interesting enough characters

Bloated Exposition would actually make for a good alternative title for Overlord lol.

Also, I'm finally getting around to finishing Ninja Slayer, and all the blatant promotions including Overlord, Granblue Fantasy, and GoodSmile are great.

Are you sure that wasn't just a special preview episode? It's not that unusual for a series which has a long break in between seasons to do something like that.

Either case, it's not officially available in the West (at least yet anyway) and won't be covered unless it is.

There was a screening of the first episode in Japan on the 30th of last month, and I believe it was streamed on one of the Japanese streaming sites on the same day as well. But yeah, not in the West AFAIK.

A Place Further Than the Universe: That was a great way to start the season. Some really great work from the No Game No Life crew. If Madhouse can keep them around, there might be some hope for them left.

Ishizuka has always struck me as a brilliant director in search of her first worthy project. Though she's done distinctive work on shows like No Game, No Life and Prince of Stride, she hasn't really had the chance to elevate writing that matches her visual strengths.

Does this assessment include NGNL Zero? I felt like Zero improved upon the original season, not just visually (as expected from a theatrical production) but also story wise. Then again, I hadn't felt that the writing for the original was significantly beneath the quality of the direction and visuals overall.
