Most Clever/Intelligent Character
These are characters that triumph via brainpower/computing power, creativity, and/or cunning rather than (or in addition to) through physical action or use of special powers. Technical or science experts, criminal masterminds, expert detectives, and top grade performers all tend to fall into this category provided they are meaningfully displaying their copious mental ability. AIs and other constructs also qualify provided they have enough personality to reasonably qualify as a "character." Characters who merely spout technobabble and don't otherwise show meaningful use of specific intelligence or cleverness do not qualify.

NOTE: The tournament will start at 11:00 p.m. forum time on Monday September 29th. Look for a different thread to be initiated at that time.

Tournament Format:
*128 competitors arranged in standard brackets, with top 8 candidates being seeded.
*This is a single-elimination tournament based on straight plurality voting. In the advent of a tie, both participants advance.
*Participants will be grouped into four 32-person brackets, called Groups A-D, respectively. One group at a time will be voted on, with one week per voting cycle, until the field has been reduced to few enough participants to start condensing (usually on round 5).
*Any registered forum member in good standing (i.e. not currently banned) may participate. You do not have to participate in earlier voting cycles to participate in later ones, but if cast votes in any given cycle then you must vote for all match-ups in that cycle. (For instance, in group A you can't vote for pairings A1-A15 but skip A16 because you don't know either participant.)
*Since familiarity with all participants is not expected, a Guide will be provided to assist in decision-making. Reviewing the comments of other voters on unknown characters is also strongly encouraged.
*A minigame will be run, similar to last time, albeit under other management; watch this thread for further details later this week.

To get us started, I'll toss out a few obvious choices:

Conan Edogawa from Case Closed/Detective Conan
Light Yagami and L from Death Note
Shikimaru from Naruto
Motoko Kusanagi from various Ghost in the Shell properties.
Naraku from Inuyasha
Shuurei Kou from Story of Saiunkoku
Shima Katase from Stellvia

EDIT: Hmmm, I thought I had added a couple more in an edit, but they seem to have not gone through. Here they are:

Horo from Spice and Wolf
Nagi Kirima from Boogiepop Phantom - Her intelligence is more obvious in the novels, and in the anime you have to more read between the lines to pick it up. However, she is invariably portrayed as exceptionally sharp and clever well beyond her years.

I nominate

Aramaki Daisuke from Ghost in the Shell.
Sa Sakujun from Saiunkoku Monogatari.
Dan Morihiko from Detective Academy Q.

More to come as I ponder.

Okay,

Lupin the 3rd from numerous Lupin the 3rd properties

Edward Elric and
Maes Hughes from Fullmetal Alchemist

Lelouch Lamperouge from Code Geass

Those are the first off the top of my brains, but I'll come up with more, I'm sure.

JesuOtaku: Please don't do an "and/or." Either nominate both decisively or drop one of them.

I would first like to second Light, L, and Jimmy Kudo/Conan Edogawa
As for my own nominations:
Taichi Hiraga-Keaton from Master Keaton
Dr. Tokita from Paprika
Dr. Tenma from Astro Boy assorted series
Dr. Tenma from Monster
Johan from Monster (mostly on basis of being cunning)

If you need me to justify any, tell me and I can edit my post later.

[Note that I have added to this post.]

Hmmm.

I second all of the following:

Light from Death Note,
L from Death Note,
Aramaki from the Ghost in the Shell franchise,
Johan from Monster,
Lupin III from the Lupin III franchise.

I'll also second Lelouch Vi Britannia from Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion. spoiler[As Mao noted, he instantly thought up fourteen possibilities to Mao's identity, and is also extremely good in all areas that require a strong intellect. He's also very clever, being able to devise contingency plans at a drop of a hat and accurately predict the strategies of others.]

I nominate Gilbert Durandel from Gundam SEED Destiny. Bad show, clever spoiler[manipulative] guy.

I'll nominate Mamo from Lupin III: Secret of Mamo. spoiler[He's very old (as in thousands of years), and thus has had time to become extremely intelligent.]

I nominate Ernst von Bahbem from RahXephon. For the same reason as Mamo.

I nominate Yuki Nagato from The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya. She's effectively a spoiler[computer-alien in the form of a human.] Seems smart, extremely intelligent.

I nominate Mr. X from Argento Soma. Anyone who knows Shakespeare off by heart is automatically intelligent in my book.

I nominate Kazukiyo Gowa from Gasaraki. He was designed to look like a snake, and for good reason too. Very cold, ruthless, driven, and intelligent.

I nominate Kisaragi Saemon from Basilisk. He and his power defines clever battle strategy.

Finally for now, I'll nominate Hibe from Wolf's Rain. Now, you may not think he's very smart, but he is undoubtedly street-smart. spoiler[He knew to fit in with the humans rather than keep his wolf form, thereby surviving where other wolves (like Kiba) would have ultimately died.]

I think that if we are to get 128 nominations, we must look outside the masterminds.

[Okay, that's really it for now.]

Quite a few of the ones I edited into my second post aren't masterminds, actually. I was greatly concerned, but there may be more out there than I thought, especially once you start filling in technical experts that are supporting characters.

Amongst the obvious ones, I also completely forgot to mention:

Lelouche from Code Geass.

darn, I thought of a new one because Key said technical guys on the side, they'll probably pop into my head in and out a lot:
Louie from Robotech: The Masters Saga/Southern Cross

i'll just edit to avoid a new post:
Ken from Digimon Adventure 02

Further nominations:

Kansaki Kizuka, commander of the Amaterasu, from Starship Operators

Shimei Yuuki, computer specialist aboard the Amaterasu, from Starship Operators

"Balalaika", head of the local Russian mafia, from Black Lagoon

There's more than one kind of "clever". I think of cleverness as being all about getting the most mileage out of the resources you get. A normally intelligent person, given a lemon, would make lemonade. A clever person macgyvers a lemon-based laser.

I want to second Shima Katase from Stellvia - I'm so glad you nominated her, Key, she would definitely been on this list otherwise.

Also seconding Washu and Yuki Nagato, who have been nominated while I was writing!

Ichiro 'Icchan' Mihara from Angelic Layer
Nico Robin from One Piece
Nami from One Piece
Chichiri from Fushigi Yuugi
Koushiro 'Izzy' Izumi from series 1&2 of Digimon (....yeah, I went there too)
Ed from Cowboy Bebop
B-Ko Daitokuji from Project A-Ko
Ami Mizuno a.k.a Sailor Mercury from Sailor Moon
Hotaru Imai from Gakuen Alice
Yukino Miyazawa from His and Her Circumstances/Kare Kano - for brains and cunning!
Yuuko Ichihara from xxxHOLiC

I just love those mad scientist types...
