This is great that it is finally coming to an end, but only three of the novels have been released in North America. Has Tokyopop decided to leave the novels unfinished? I have only read the first novel, but I enjoyed it a lot, so I wish they would finish releasing the rest of the series. Also, Kyoto Animation needs to start making a sequel to The Second Raid.

It took me forever to find the third FMP! light novel. I managed to snag the last or second to last copy at a Borders. I think it is basically impossible to find the light novels in actual bookstores these days.

Tokyopop really messed up on their light novel department. There are a couple of series I was looking forward to buying. Unfortunately, there were few releases. I was looking forward to the Kino no Tabi (Kino's Journey) and Scrapped Princess light novels.

I liked the first FMP! light novel despite the minor typos and grammatical errors. With this announcement, now would be a good time to go find my second and third FMP! light novels.

Aye.

Final isn't very numeric. Is the encyclopedia page correct in that this will be novel #7, or are we even further behind?

If its Wikipedia page is accurate, then this final novel should be novel eleven, and I have no reason to doubt the accuracy of this list.

Hmm, I don't remember seeing this the last time I was on this page. Apparently, back in October the fourth novel got a listing on Amazon.co.uk, and it is supposedly being published by Tokyopop for release in 2011. That's not a North American release, but maybe this is foreshadowing for an eventual North American release?

Great news, and if they do animate it, I hope they just make a normal sequel and not some movie/OVA reboot just to f*ck us over. I don't know how many years it takes for something to get rebooted these days, but since the original anime had its run in 2002 and Second Raid in 2005, one can start speculating. Confused

And it will be decades before I finally get to read it due to TokyoPop screwing the US market over. Now all I want is for Kyoto to animate the rest of the series and I will be one happy fan.

I pray that Yen Press gets handed the rights to FMP novels. I think they have done a damn nice job with the Haruhi books and in a somewhat timely fashion too! It's an avg of 6-7 months for each new haruhi book to come out. That would be what, only 3 1/2 years for the whole fmp series to be released? /excited.

I have no problem with Tokyopop having the FMP license as long as they're actually releasing them. But they're not. Originally, they were scheduled to release one every 6 months, but as mentioned already in this thread, the fourth book never materialized in spite of it being listed on amazon. They don't seem to be releasing any more Scrapped Princess either. The only one that I've read from them that they appear to still be releasing is The Twelve Kingdoms. And Viz seems to have stopped publishing Shakugan no Shana, so pretty much every light series that I've bought has stopped being released.

Yen Press would be the one exception, but they haven't gotten all that far into Haruhi or Spice and Wolf (which are the two that I've been buying from them). So, I don't know if they merit any more faith than the others, but I sure hope so. And if they do, then I hope that they start picking up series that other companies have dropped - like FMP appears to be. IIRC, they've done that with some manga.

Unfortunately, light novels just don't seem to sell well here in the US, and they're bound to cost far more to translate than manga since there's way more text, so the cost per volume will be higher for the publisher. And since they probably sell less than manga, it's that much less profitable. Most of the companies publishing them seem to be dropping them. Seven Seas dropped all of their light novel series as I recall (and I really wanted The Familiar of Zero from them. *sigh*). At this rate, it would be far faster and far more reliable to just learn to read Japanese than it would be to wait for much in the way of light novels to be released here. It's definitely sad, but unfortunately, at the moment it appears to be true. Anime is selling poorly enough these days, but light novel sales are just pathetic.

I recall hearing that the author of FMP didn't want any more or the anime to be made until the books had been finished (though I don't know if that's true or not). If that's true, then the odds of us getting another FMP anime soon go up significantly. I've loved pretty much everything from Kyoto Animation, but FMP is definitely the one that I want more of the most. Heck, I'd even take another comedy-centric series like Fumoffu. But I'm definitely among those who've been wishing that they'd get on with it and finally make more FMP.

Still, this is good news. Whether we get more anime or not remains to be seen, but having the book series be finished sure won't hurt our chances.

i agree with these things
I want the novel in english
I want kyo-ani to do more of it (fall season maybe)

i would also like to note that the author has a good relationship with kyo-ani having done work with them on Haruhi and Lucky Star in some spots as a script writer.

Oh no! Is that true? Are you positive? Crying or Very sad

It would explain why I've been unable to find the third volume of Strawberry Panic...

I'ts true, they decided it a while back. They couldn't even be bothered to finish what they started, even though printing that last novel would likely have gotten the "wait and see" crowd buying. I guess between risking a minor loss or just a break-even to please fans and just dropping it, they picked just dropping it.

Once I finish the mangas for Venus Versus Virus and Dance in the Vampire Bund, they won't be getting any more of my money.

At least we might be getting the 4th FMP! Novel from Tokyopop. They've made rumblings about it and some solicitations have appeared, like the one mentioned here. Tokyopop gives the impression of trying at least.

Isn't publishing a light novel a little bit more expensive than a manga? Seven Seas isn't really a big company compared to say Yen Press so they can't really make rash decisions at this time of age.

I'm greatly awaiting a final animated concusion to the series. It would've been nice if they made more filler like FUMMOFU too, it was hilarious!
