The question asked for anime that were based on a manga. For some of those titles, the manga came afterwards and generally speaking, when there's a manga that based off of an anime series, it's usually not that great.

I can think of quite a few series where the anime was better than the manga, like Case Closed. Personally, the Case Closed manga is a bit more violent, plus it's kind of hard to follow the story a bit when the art can seem at times a bit choppy.

I was picked on for liking anime. And for no more than wearing the occasional anime T-shirt and drawing fanart. I was already being bullied beforehand, for no apparent reason.

It was my peers at school who bullied me, but I could go elsewhere and say and do the exact same things and the reaction would change to "hey, you're pretty good at drawing." Heck, when I changed schools, it became a non-issue because it wasn't something my new peers looked down on.

Honestly, bullies are idiots. It only takes one bully to turn a room against someone they dislike. Assuming that there's validity more often than not is giving them far too much credit.

If the letters you receive tend to be from the "dorky" teens who like anime, that's probably because they're already naturally vocal. Introverts and people who are habitually bullied are not as likely to come forward. Because asking for help can make things worse.

It is not helpful to say that bullies have a "reason" for being jackasses. You might as well say that it's perfectly okay for kids to be bullied. It's not.

Witch Hunter Robin was mega-popular?

You loathed it?

How could anyone feel so strongly about a show that did so little with itself?

Anime > Manga, not bothering to explain but trying to pick obscure examples:
Utakata
Pet Shop of Horrors
Saber Marionette J (or did that come after the anime?)
Ghost Talker's Daydream (I think I'll try writing this one up)

shows like Ranma ½ and Dirty Pair were chock full of fanservice, as were many, many others.

I don't consider those series to be fanservice-oriented, unless you're into old men getting whacked repeatedly for panty raids and girls who spend more time dog-fighting than shopping. Wink

There was a time in the 90's - and this is certainly not true anymore given that today's kids have access to violent duck-fisting porn at their fingertips shortly after exiting the birth canal - when yes, it was kinda cool if you had a VHS tape of Ninja Scroll or Akira, chiefly because they were violent and contained nudity.

Language, man. There are kids reading your column, too.

Part 4 still holds up fairly well, actually.

Ramblin': Lupin the manga's actually quite better in certain respects than many episodes of the second series. The second manga, though, is hit-and-miss.

Anime series better than the manga it's based on, and why?

Right off the top of my head I'd have to say Nodame Cantabile purely and simply for the reason that the manga can only tell you what the music is, where the anime can actually play the music.

There's one episode that stands out in my mind, where the entire first half of the episode is a performance of Rachmaninoff's Piano Concerto No.2 in C minor (opus 18).
As soon as that episode went over I was onto iTunes looking for a performance of that piece as I had to listen to the rest of it.

I really wish that series would get licenced.

Nonsense, the earlier they learn what's out there, the better. Why just recently, I had the pleasure of a friend introducing me to one Mr. Hands, and his horse-related exploits.

As for this week's answers, one segment of the fandom that I don't understand is the so-called posers. They don't annoy me (in theory, anyway...I haven't actually met one), but I can't understand how these types of people exist in a society where being bullied for being into anime is common. They get to be just as socially ostracized as other anime fans (I assume), without the benefit of knowing what other stuff is out there beyond Naruto and Bleach.

NewYizer's answer was hilarious though. Perfect example of how little solidarity there is between anime fans. The internet breeds contempt, I guess.

I believe I went and checked it out, the anime came out after the manga.

Visual Novels and Manga kinda go together hand in hand, Manga just visualizes the more intense situations.

So the Higurashi anime is, IMHO, superior to the manga and visual novel. And I read a translated version of the first chapter long ago and found the anime better.

I love it when you do that. I chuckled out loud even though I had no idea what Meister Brau was and had to google it to find out. Very Happy

I certainly share this view, although I fortunately don't see much of this myself.

AJ wrote:
I'm embarrassed when the yaoi fangirls run rampant, claiming that this or that "bishie" MUST be gay because IT'S CANON, even when it's not, and I'm embarrassed when they shove that in other people's faces.

Indeed, I cannot agree more. It boggles my mind, but they actually seem to believe that this is canon, and would go to great lengths to fruitlessly try and prove themselves right. I took my FF:U fan status underground because one of these was giving me a permanent headache.

AJ wrote:
I'm embarassed when they refuse to watch any dubbed anime for the same reason, when they refuse to believe that maybe the English version is actually good, maybe even better.

This one I cannot relate to, though. Everyone has a preference. If you love having a chocolate sundae every week, you probably don't want to be pestered all the time by other people trying to convince you to order the strawberry one (even if they do think it's better).

Except that they completely stuffed up the ending in the anime. Seriously, spoiler[Kouta and Lucy kiss and make up?] What the heck is up with that? I'll agree that most of the parts that made it into the anime were indeed better, but that issue about the ending really kind of ruined it for me (at least to the extent that I wouldn't call the anime superior, anyway).

"If you're going to fly your dork banner with gleeful abandon around a big pack of people who just can't wait to wail on your ass for being a giant nerd, well, all I can say is you don't get to claim ignorance."

Perhaps the greatest quote in an Answerman column in quite some time. Nicely said, Zac.

and from NewYizer:

Great stuff. I also wonder if Zac was ever beaten up in high school for his love of anime, or if he was low key about it. Certainly he's not implying he was in with the in crowd, he went where the in crowd goes. Yes, in with the in crowd. Does he know what the in crowd knows? Anytime of the year, don't you hear? Dressing fine, making time... we breeze up and down the street, we get respect from the people we meet...

Oh, sorry. Don't know what got into me there.

I'm more partial to the Fullmetal Alchemist anime than its manga. The manga certainly has a more comprehensive and complete "world", but I enjoy how there's a stronger emphasis on brotherhood in the TV series.

I disagree. The Elfen Lied Anime stopped at a rather opportune time. I argue that the Manga, past the part where the Anime finished, went significantly downhill, and that the Anime was smart to end when it did. I wonder if Dorcas_Aurelia will use a similar argument.

--------------------------------------------------------------

By the way, did anyone else notice how six of the eight submitters this week for the Answerfan section mentioned Naruto? I confess I was rather surprised when I realised that. I mean, I was expecting two or three, to be sure, but six of eight?

So, basically, fans ruin everything while simontanously pump enough into it as it's life-support. It's a give and take affair.

One might say the anime fandom is one big tsundere fest.
