That's part of the reason why something like Izumi Kitta's performance in WATAMOTE stands out so much to me; it actually dared to be really different.

Whaattt....Did we already forget bout Ayako Yoshitani in Mysterious Girlfriend X?

For shame....

While performance quality can vary, actual creativity in Japanese vocal performances in anime does seem relatively rare.

Perhaps it's because I don't watch the dominant genres of anime like harems, shows set in high schools, etc., but I really disagree with this statement. The best seiyuu display extraordinary range and creativity in their work. Contrast Paku Romi's work as Teresa with her hilarious performance as Higepiyo. Paku had an especially difficult task in Claymore since Teresa basically is the only voice heard for a couple of episodes, and much of it is narration.

How about Sakurai Takahiro? I simply cannot imagine anyone doing a better job as the Medicine Seller in Bakeneko and Mononoke. The English dub actor doesn't hold a candle to Sakurai's performance. As I mentioned earlier in this thread, I was very taken by Sakakibara Yoshiko's performance as Asahina Tomiko in SSY. She's not on-screen often, but when she appears she is very compelling.

I could continue to list a variety of strong performances by Japanese dub actors that I have admired over the years.

Oh, and anyone who thinks Tanaka Rie can only do tsundere voices needs to watch Hataraki Man and revel in her reflective, world-weary performance in that show.
