The fact that Handley plead guilty, didn't accept any assistance from the CBLDF and never defended himself just for possessing art earned my disdain as a fellow Iowan.

Actually the CBLDF did help out to strike down one section of the law used against him, that resulted in having to rely on proving obscenity first. Otherwise, the original law would've made it much easier to prosecute. (All porn in the US btw can technically be illegal by virtue of any 12 people finding it obscene, but since obscenity by definition is something not evident by the facts, that acts buffer to somewhat mitigate pursuing people)

However you need to understand why he plead guilty. With the way the US justice system works, 97% of federal criminal cases are plea bargained, because if you don't plead guilty and are convicted, the punishment is much worse. Had he not plea bargained and settled for 6 months prison and probation afterwards, he faced at best, a 5 year mandatory minimum sentence.

I actually cried after reading about the artist's death.
Dying at age 24 is way too young.
Life is short, enjoy every second of it.

Such a shame, Yasuda had his whole career ahead of him and was really coming into his own as a doujin artist--didn't do exclusively lolicon works either, his most recent parody subjects were treatments of Ayase from OreImo and Asuna from SAO. So sad for the family and friends he left behind too soon.

I really liked the Kobato one. I think the cover thumbnail is in the article.

Still shocked... 24 is unbelievable.

Hmm, must have missed or forgotten that part of the case. And I understand he got a lighter sentence because of the plea bargain, but I just figured since CBLDF has a pretty good track record with legal cases involving comics and other media, if he had entered the trial pleading not guilty with the CBLDF assisting in his defense, he might have had a really good chance of getting his name cleared.

I'm still just ticked off because of state pride and the fact that I pitched in a few bucks to the defense fund. Confused
