Given how both Aniplex of America and Funimation is owned by Sony I speculated that at one point Sony would have Aniplex of America and Funimation share content is someway. I see some people asking whether or not Fullmetal Achemist: Brotherhood would be re dubbed, because of Vic Mignogna. I don't think Funimation or Aniplex of America would be willing to hire another voice actor to essentially be the "new Edward Elric". From what I've read anime dubbing is very expensive and time consuming for both the voice actor and the studio. You can still hear Scott Freeman as Issei in the earlier seasons of High School DxD but in later seasons was replaced by Josh Grelle due to Scott Freeman being charged with possession of child porn in 2015.

There's only a few anime that got re dubbed examples being Dragon Ball Z, One Piece, Sailor Moon, and Cardcaptor Sakura.

Dragonball Z really only had the 1st 2 Seasons and the 1st 3 Movies redubbed for the U.S. since Funimation started with the Frieza Saga while the Canadian Dub was made for Canada only since then and Funimation later redubbed the beginning with most of the normal cast they used on their dub when they were done Dubbing the rest of the series. Also redubbing the 1st 13 episodes and 1st 3 Dragonball Movies.

I don't think residuals are a thing in general for anime dubs, possibly due to how dub track rights actually work.

Disney pays residuals for their dubs of Studio Ghibli films, although they also use real actors rather than anime dub voice actors. Not sure how Netflix and Amazon handle their dubs. If they're Union, then they probably get residuals.

I remember hearing how Sean Schemmel made more money voicing a minor character on the Disney Junior preschooler cartoon Sofia the First than he did voicing Son Goku. I think anime dubs are the poster child for the whole "we'll pay you in exposure" thing.

Anime voice actors never get residuals regardless if the project is union. The only exception is if it’s a union project that was also shown on broadcast TV (ABC, NBC, CBS, FOX, The CW, etc), which explains why 4Kids dubs paid well (better than union rates), but were still non-union. Crispin Freeman once said he only got residuals once for an anime dub.

I’m curious if that was his small role in Howl’s Moving Castle.

In most of those cases the redub was made because the original dub was heavily edited for NA broadcast. There's also Studio Khara/NYAV redubbing Eva and Sentai releasing a new dub of Saint Seiya recently, and Funimation redubbng Escaflowne for the new extended version. There's also Pioneer's redub of Akira and the upcoming Gundam SEED redub. Some of Disney's dubs of Ghibli films are also redubs. Like My Neighbor Totoro was originally dubbed by Fox, Castle in the Sky and Kiki's Delivery Service both had earlier dubs by Streamline, and of course there's also the infamous Warriors of the Wind cut. And The Castle of Cagliostro has had several dubs.

I think the big factor preventing FMAB from being redubbed is that there's no real money to be gained from doing so. FMAB already has made as much money as it's going to from anime fandom as most everyone in the fandom has seen it by now and most everyone who wants to own a copy already has one by now. If there was a profit to be gained from doing a new dub, they probably would if only to milk the series more, but as of now it would be more costly to redub it than to not. To be honest, I think the Japanese version is vastly under-rated and Romi Park deserves more praise.

Wasn't he the Turnip Head in that movie? He also played some background voices in Ponyo.

More Aniplex titles coming to Funimation? Cool, but I hope we'll also be getting more Funimation titles on Wakanim (not just simulcasts but older shows). This merger should benefit us Europeans as well

though the real question is will they be doing a redub casting for edward elric!?

its kinda obvious why some people say it should be needed and i wouldnt be surprised by it, though i really do have my doubts it will actually happen!!!

the show went up yesterday, nothing was changed. No redub. honestly, who genuinely thinks Aniplex is going to spend money to just redub one character. That's dumb

Funimation only has streaming rights to FMAB. They don't have the rights to anything else. This is just more business as usual as part of their Sony deal to stream more Aniplex titles.

They're not gonna redub anyone, even if they were allowed to. It would just be a waste of money. No one's gonna want to buy a re-dub with Ed recast. If we were to ever get a new movie, ova or even series, they will of course recast him, cause at that point it's that or nothing, but a new dub with a recast Ed won't do well when the old dub already exists.
