Exclusive: Dark Horse to Release Gou Tanabe's The Shadow Out of Time Manga
posted on by Rafael Antonio Pineda
Dark Horse Comics revealed on Tuesday that it has licensed Gou Tanabe's The Shadow Out of Time (Toki o Koeru Kage) manga adaptation of H.P. Lovecraft 's novella, and will ship the manga on October 28 in bookstores and October 29 in comic book stores. Zack Davisson, who translated Dark Horse Comics' previous English releases of Tanabe's H.P. Lovecraft adaptations, is returning as translator for the manga. Steve Dutro is the letterer for the manga.

Dark Horse describes the manga:
Nathaniel Wingate Peaslee was once a respectable professor of political economy. Though he taught at Miskatonic University in Arkham, his temper was of a reasonable sort, not at all interested in the occult. That has changed. In 1908, standing in the lecture hall, Professor Peaslee saw his classroom suddenly twist into an uncanny, alien vista, and he collapsed unconscious. What awoke was not the Nathaniel Peaslee his colleagues knew—at least, not his mind. Now associating with strange people, and speaking oddly of time, distant lands, and concepts of existence, his travels and research disturbed those who knew him, including his friends, wife and even children. It was not until 1913 that Professor Peaslee came back to his right mind, with no memory of his strange sabbatical. His search for understanding of those five missing years leads him—and readers—on a journey across the globe to a place where a long-vanished race still casts their shadow out of time.
Tanabe launched the manga in Kadokawa's Monthly Comic Beam in April 2018, and ended it in November 2018.
The manga is part of a series of manga adaptations of H.P. Lovecraft's works by Tanabe. Dark Horse Comics published his manga of H.P. Lovecraft's The Hound and Other Stories in August 2017, which includes "The Hound," "The Temple," and "The Nameless City." Dark Horse Comics began releasing Tanabe's At The Mountains Of Madness manga in June 2019. The series was nominated for Best Comic by the 46th Angoulême International Comics Festival in 2019. Dark Horse has also released a single omnibus volume of Tanabe's The Shadow Over Innsmouth manga. Dark Horse also released Tanabe's The Call of Cthulhu manga in October 2024, which won the Superior Achievement in a Graphic Novel award in this year's Bram Stoker Awards on June 14. Dark Horse's latest release of Tanabe's adaptations is The Colour Out of Space, which was released on July 1.
Tanabe also released manga based on Lovecraft's The Haunter of the Dark, The Outsider, The Dunwich Horror, and The Shadow Out of Time.
Tanabe launched Short Stories about Dreamlands manga based on H.P. Lovecraft's Dream Cycle stories in November 2023, and ended the series in April 2024. Tanabe launched the Lovecraft no Genei (The Lovecraft's Phantom) manga in Comic Beam in June 2024, and ended it in December 2024.
