Absolutely fantastic news. I've been on the edge of picking up the DVD for a very long while now, but getting it on Blu is a Day One purchase for me for sure. I loved the hell out of my old VHS tapes back in the day, and I'm sure the show stands up today.

This article is very oddly worded. "Will release the series as one movie..."

Just say they licensed Gunbuster: The Movie, the compilation movie, which is exactly what they did. The confusion probably comes from Gunbuster vs Diebuster, which the article specifies as a single film, but that's not really the case. It was a double-feature of what it technically two movies (that were admittedly meant to be watched back-to-back with an intermission in between, but still two movies).

They were released separately on home video by Bandai Visual in the States (and in Japan too, if I'm not mistaken), they're even treated as separate films in the Gun Vs Die box set.

Simply saying they licensed the first of two compilation films that made up Gunbuster vs Diebuster would make for a much less confusing article.

Ugh, the movie? Why? Surely they know that fans want the full OVA series?

I got really excited, and then learned it's just the pointless compilation that basically cuts out all of Jung and most of the build up. Come on guys, Gunbuster has a REAL BD release now (sans pubes), you don't need to peddle this shit again.

I guess to get old remastered anime out here it takes Kickstarters. Never gonna get Lodoss, Five Star Stories, or El Hazard at this rate.

I watched Gunbuster on dvd in 2010 and it was pretty much everything you could ask for from an anime, cool sci fi stuff, emotional stakes in the story and cute girls in various states of undress, what's not to love? Razz

From Siren Visual in Australia:

Personally I'd love to see an English Blu-Ray release of Gainax's Gunbuster OVA series to compliment Nadia's release which I just finished watching. I have the movie Blu-Ray which looks fantastic, but is very fragmented as it cuts a lot out from the OVAs.

LOVE Gunbuster, but the last time I checked with the licensor, the original series had lingering copyright issues over the soundtrack.

It's most likely because of the Chariots of Fire cover tune that was replaced in the BVUSA DVD but then again, the newly-recorded 5.1 track, that was first introduced in the movie version, is included in the Japanese Blu-ray of the OVA version & the song is replaced there too.

Either way, it really sucks and the movie getting picked up over the OVA was sorta expected to happen because in addition to Siren, Dybex in France recently tried getting the OVA but failed and got both Gunbuster & Diebuster films instead. Sad

Like the others have said I was really excited because I watched the series a few months ago and I loved it. But the movie just isn't nearly as interesting. But if there are licensing issues I suppose it can't be helped.

It's fair bleeping use, dammit. It's an 'homage' to the song, not the effing song itself. And there was a Married with Children episode which did use the actual song in a joking fashion, but no one got sued there.

They have no backbone and are too afraid of anything that could even remotely happen. Rolling Eyes

Why not simply replace it?
Lack of original sources for the Audio Stems? (Where all you would need is the stuff for the offending Episode. Go in and replace it)

If you aren't going to bother getting the correct version. WHY license it at all? No one wants that.

Count me as one of those disappointed that the original OVA series wasn't picked up for U.S. Blu-ray release. Guess I'll be holding on to the Bandai VIsual USA DVD set.

From the sounds of this I don't think they're releasing the actual movie, but the OVA with the openings and ending cut out. Like what Manga did when they released Macross II.

Good point. Some clarification from Maiden Japan would be nice. Still, what would be the point? Reverse importation counter-measure?

I went from excited to meh. I really want the OVA series not the movie. I get that there are some music rights problems, but I really don't mind the replacement of music if it not to drastic, my owning of Bandai's Zeta Gundam sets is a testament of that.

If this is indeed the not that good compilation movie of Gunbuster, it is not even worth mentioning on ANN's part. I want the original OVA. Make it happen Maiden Japan/Sentai.
