Wise Man's Grandchild Anime Recycles the Same House Multiple Times

posted on by Kim Morrissy

Drawing hundreds of backgrounds for an anime is tough, especially on a tight deadline. It's common practice in the industry nowadays for background artists to use reference photos and stock images to make the job quicker. Sometimes, however, viewers can't help but notice when shortcuts are being taken, especially when the same stock image is used multiple times in the same anime, or even in the same episode.

Such is the case with this season's Wise Man's Grandchild, which used the same image of a house, shown from the same angle, to depict at least three separate houses. The only difference is that the roofs are slightly recolored.

The first image is of Shin's house from episode 1. The second is of the Klode manor house from episode 9 where Shin and his friends stay for the training camp. The third is of the Klode estate where Sizilien's parents live, also shown in episode 9.

An identical shot of a wealthy person's house is also shown in episode 8 of KonoSuba – God’s blessing on this wonderful world!!, indicating that Wise Man's Grandchild may not be the only anime to use this stock image. The two shows also share the same background art director, Masakazu Miyake.

Wise Man's Grandchild premiered on April 10. It adapts Tsuyoshi Yoshioka's fantasy novel series Kenja no Mago. Masafumi Tamura (Two Car, Ange Vierge) is directing the anime at SILVER LINK.
