I'm watching everything that was mentioned and am enjoying them all, with the exception of Nukitashi, which I'll watch once it's done in a couple of weeks time.

There will usually be at least one anime per season that I wish would get episode reviews, but yeah, sometimes a series will fly under the radar simply because it's not that good. Even if we didn't already have Laid-Back Camp to compare it to, I still wouldn't be impressed by Solo Camping for Two from what I've seen of it.

I know death-game series have their haters, but isn't acting like they're all garbage that no one could possibly like a little much?

I appreciate any anime with an amount of sauce on it, so I appreciate a series this dedicated to simply writing its title in different cool ways.

I was not planning on watching Necronomico, especially after the sub fiasco, but dammit, I too am also a huge fan of shows doing stuff like that*, and now I'm gonna have to give it a shot

*I wrote off Witch Watch as being okay but not my jam after the first couple of episodes but after Youtube's algorithm showed me the "altered" OP in episode 3 I was just like "well, okay, maybe a few more episodes". I am a truly embarrassing mark for any show messing with it's opening/presentation on an episodic basis.

I admit to being one of the people responsible for subjecting James to so much GoHands, however I think GoHands Isekai is where I draw the line.
That's how I feel now anyway. Who knows what my mental state will be when it actually comes out? I might be up for evil actions by then

I was already planning on giving Betrothed to My Sister's Ex a shot after it finished but I'm even more intrigued now I know that it's not just wish fullfillment, but also dives into court politics. One of my biggest pet peeves of the villainess (or villainess adjacent) trend is that the setup is perfect for political intrigue and drama, but most shows just use it for comedy or romance set-ups.

Betrothed to My Sister's Ex is fun, but the drawings too often have a scratchiness to them that reminds you of how the show is barely held together with duct tape and a dream at moments

You skipped on Dekin no Mogura: The Earthbound Mole for this column. Its one of those niche horror (but is more of slice-of-life or comedy) shows. I hope that it gets a review at the end of the season.

Yes! That's one of my favorites of this season. I too hope more people give it a try and it gets a review.

The setup is absolutely used for the romance plotline. There are a few narrative threads that go beyond that, but...don't set your expectations too high. Most everything else is used to illustrate why the leads are wonderful and wonderful for each other.

I kinda wish that ANN wouldn't solely count on a popularity poll for what shows should get reviewed. I understand wanting to review what's popular but as we all well know by now, popular doesn't equal good. Maybe reserve a few spots for something that doesn't get the votes but looks interesting or has potential based on the creators/staff.

Usually you can tell a show is gonna be great if it doesn't get voted in for reviews. Don't know why but that's how it usually is. Of the roughly 20-25 shows I pick up in most season, usually only like 3-5 are in the reviews and it's almost always the worst ones. Even this season, 3 of my top 4 non-carryover shows, Nukitashi, Nyaight of the Living Cat, and Mattaku Saikin no Tantei to Kitara missed out (New Panty & Stocking) the lone one making it), while City, by far the worst show of the season, did.

As someone who's been watching Betrothed to My Sister's Ex the whole time, there's good reason you haven't seen much discussion about it: the story isn't very good.

In many ways it feels like a knock-off of My Happy Marriage, albeit dressed up in the generic Ye Olden Times setting of your average villainess story. Most of the time it's borrowing the broad strokes of that story - a young woman abused by her birth family, forced into servitude, sent to marry a man with a (supposedly) bad reputation only to find acceptance and love in his household. Sometimes it lifts very obvious and specific things from MHM (like the main couple bonding over the heroine gifting a hair ribbon to her fiancé) that really make it feel like a cheap knockoff (despite its unusually solid and consistent animation, a rarity in shows of this nature).

This show is truly one of those cases where you can tell the problem goes back to the original light novels. The character writing is incredibly shallow - Marie (the heroine) is a sadsack who is never allowed to make any significant emotional progress, so she spends nearly the entirely of the series deflecting and disbelieving any compliments given to her. It's meant to make her look humble, but mostly it makes her frustrating. Meanwhile, we are told that Kyros has this foreboding reputation, but pretty much from the moment he meets Marie he's in constant Wifeguy mode. Meanwhile, every one who isn't a supportive servant or a wacky ally is the most blatant, sneering, mustache-twirling villain possible. These sorts of Cinderella-style light-novel romances are often self-indulgent to some degree just by their very nature, but in this instance it's so obvious that it makes the whole thing feel childish. Sometimes it's WAY too on-the-nose about being a Cinderella story, right down to giving Marie fancy glass shoes as part of her inevitable makeover.

The sad part is that there are good ideas on the fringes of this story. Kryos dealing with systematic racism within the nobility, him turning his household into a refuge for other immigrants like himself and his mother, Marie's grandmother being revealed to be spoiler[a well-known diplomat and interpreter who tried to mold her eldest granddaughter in her image]. All of them have so much narrative and thematic potential! Yet all of them, like the animation, are squandered on such a mediocre story, which is currently in the process of revealing the obvious twist about the sister that the show's been telegraphing from the start. The whole thing feels like pearls before swine. It's far from the worse show I've seen this year, but it's certainly the most disappointing.

It's my second favorite show of the season so I'm happy to see it getting appreciation in the comments!

To be fair, that's what the opportunity for "traditional" full reviews are for: To fill in gaps that the Weekly Reviews would otherwise have. Also, not every show really works in a weekly review format, which has been admitted in the occasional weekly review, depending on the show.

Weekly Reviews are done mainly for the sake of keeping a regular & consistent readership on a weekly basis, so by their very nature they have to be for the shows that the ANN readership itself are most interested in, i.e. what's most "popular". If they were to do a weekly segment for a show that the readership, as a whole, didn't really find interesting then it wouldn't get people reading it, since they weren't interested in it to start with. However, full reviews for those titles still have merit because now the readership can go "Oh, yeah, that was a new show, too... I wonder how it played it?" & read a review for the series as a whole & see if it might be worth going back to & watching outside of a weekly format.
