The review is for the TV series, but the main picture is from the movie! That aside, I have to agree with the review. It is indeed a great series. I'm not sure whether or not it was a good thing that the anime and manga weren't mentioned in the review, but it's probably best to let the TV series stand up on its own merits.

Yes, I agree this is a wonderful TV series. And having at least seen the anime, I agree that it should also stand on its own merits.
Both the anime and live action carry a lot of the same qualities, but it's expected to have a few differences since you can only do so much with real world actors and surroundings as opposed to animating whatever crazy antics Onizuka does in the anime. I haven't read the manga yet, but I'm sure you can't go wrong with any of these three incarnations. I really hope Media Blasters will license this live action series someday... . EDIT: Corrected some grammar. Last edited by Tony K. on Tue Jun 07, 2005 12:14 am; edited 1 time in total |

Yeah, the manga is awesome as well. Frankly, after seeing the live action version, I could never go back to the anime... I think the live action version carries more of the human element, the emotional impact is much stronger.
While I'm always happy to read the manga, the live action version is the "great" one. |

So does the live action show take place after the Anime? What about the manga?

It's an alternate retelling, as far as I understand it. |

It kinda is it's own alternate telling of the story, so it's neither before nor after the anime. As far as the manga goes, the live action is based on the manga, not the anime. In fact, chronologically speaking, the anime came after the live action series was done. |

Awww... I was hoping for a continuation. I just finished the series and was loving it until its abrupt ending.
Does anybody know if the R2 DVDs have english subs? |

I don't believe so. You can try looking here. Pretty expensive, eh? |

Ouch! Still, with the movie coming out here in the U.S. soon, I'm definetly buying it. While it isn't as good as the TV series, I still want to show my support in hopes that the TV series gets licensed as well. |

Didn't this show come out in 98'
Anyhow, yes it was a good show and was the reason I'm such a big fan of Japanese Drama shows now. I thought they decided to release the series in the US, then I realized it's just an overall review of the shows. The special was OK, but I liked the Movie as well. EDIT: And for a brief history, the live action show came on TV in 1998 and was based off of the mangas. GTO the live action series became so popular that they decided to make an animated show based off of the mangas as well. Ask anyone in Japan and they'll all tell you how great the live action GTO is. Super popular and started many careers. Who is bringing out the movie? |

Want a continuation from the anime? Then read the manga. It's a lot better then the anime and a lot better then tha live action series. While the live action has a more human aspect with less crazy perverted antic, it also lack a lot of stuff that wasn't in the original story and the production wasn't great either. Some of the supporting actor was stiff. Not sure why many people didn't enjoy the movie, I thought the movie was good, not great but it has its moment. |

Jonathan, do you read the Chicago Sun-Times? Because the last line of your review is suspiciously similar to the last line of an Ebert review I read a while back. Either great minds think alike, or you have to 'fess up!

Nice review, but doesn't it take place in a high school (not junior high)?
I love this series. The key difference between the live action and the manga/anime is that Onizuka really wants to be a teacher, which makes the serious moments infinitely more plausible and effective. Interesting: I was rewatching the You're Under Arrest drama the other day and I swear the hostage-taking bank robber in the second episode is the same actor as Teshigawara-sensei. I guess he really lost it after the machinations at the end of GTO.
Wow! Nice catch! I wouldn't be surprised, though if he did read it, it was probably subconscious. |
