What about Aria (13) and Aria the Natural (26)? Ai yori aoshi (24) and Ai yori aoshi ~Enishi~ (12)? Full Metal Panic! (24) and Fumoffu / TSR (12/13) ? Sister Princess (26) and Sister Princess ~Repure~ (13)? Shuffle! (24) and Shuffle Memories (12)? Yeah, a lot of sequels do mirror the episode counts of their precedent series (which are not the same as "prequels" as AniDB asserts), but for every one that does, there's another one that doesn't. |
You have a few touche's there. For starters, I've never seen four of the five you've mentioned, but I will bring up a few things. I never considered Aria and Natural to be sequels. Natural was more of a remake in my opinion. I never watched Aoshi, but if you consider that example and Sister Princess, it seems that anything with a ~blahblah~ title is just an extension of the series and not a real full size season, that's why it's half of the original. Shuffle Memories is a rehash/alternate retelling, so that doesn't count either. And finally, as for FMP. I consider Fumoffu to be its own standalone series. You could easily have it and not the other two series and vice versa. TSR was a major disappointment in my eyes, and lacked any real development. I'd put it into an OVA classification more than anything else.
However you do make good points that there are some out there. However I've not yet seen a show that makes a jump from 13 eps to 26 eps, or, as some people are saying 48-52. But thanks for pointing those out anyway.

More Haruhi! I can't wait! I really enjoyed the first series and am looking forward to the next one. I will be glad when my Haruhi vol. 2 LE comes. I had pre-ordered from AnimeNation but they don't even have it in stock yet. So, I cancelled my pre-order and ordered it from The Right Stuf. I am looking forward to watching the Kyon Order bonus DVD.

Awesome news Hopefully it'll be as entertaining as the first season. Though when it gets licensed it'll be bad news for my wallet

Disappointing or not, it still aired on TV, so it can't be called an OVA spinoff or whatever.

You mentioned one in your original post. Nanoha StrikerS will in fact be 26 eps long (afaik), whereas A's and the original were both 13 eps.

About the episode order:
You can think of it as a 'gimmick', but keep in mind that the reason it was done in the first place was that the novels are out of chronological order as well.
Consider this, too- the main story arc, which was six episodes, was aired in order, but with interruptions from the shorter storylines that took place later.
I think it would be perfectly reasonable to do the same thing in the second season, as long as they don't go overboard with it. Don't forget that a lot of fans really liked the broadcast order. We got the special edition dvd's just for that, after all.

Just to add something, Honey and Clover also had a varying amount of episodes for each season. The odd thing was that the second season (sequel) was actually shorter in length than the first one.
On another note, I'm really happy to see more Haruhi I just hope it comes out this year, there's too much anticipation. BTW, how many Haruhi novels are there in total?

That gimick has been done, I doubt they will repeat it. |
I don't see any reason why they couldn't do it again. Whichever way they do it would be fine by me, but I wouldn't discount the possibility of them doing it again. It worked the first time and plenty of people liked it that way.

Ah, Bandai... A blessing and a curse. I adore their over-priced Haruhi boxes... But I got in trouble for spending too much when I bought the LE vol. 2. I must say, with the second season, I'll only be buying regular edition... Plus, that'll leave me with money for more manga.

The novels were in chronological order.
The director realized the dangers of a straight up point 1 to point 2 linear storyline with a series like Haruhi and decided to pull in "fluff" from later volumes to fill voids left by the main sequence 6 episode plot of Haruhi in its 14 episode run.

Huh? No they aren't, book 2 takes place between a couple of stories in books 5 and 6... and one story in book 6 takes place in the middle of book 7. Combined with that, they aren't even serialised in "The Sneaker" in chronological order, the first published story there was "The Boredom of Haruhi Suzumiya", the first and titular story of the third book. And the books were serialised in The Sneaker before they were released in light novel form.

That would make for some interesting discussion on what would make the main story for season 2.
I wonder if it would be possible to make it 26 episodes, run through both The Sighs of Haruhi Suzumiya and The Disappearence of Haruhi Suzumiya as main plotlines in the right order to create a reasonable base, and the fill out with short stories from volume 3, 5 & 6 and maybe some original content. I suppose that if they make it 13 eps, The Disappearence of Haruhi Suzumiya will be preferable as the main plot. But I'd definately wanna see more of Shamisen, so a compressed version if The Sighs of Haruhi Suzumiya would be appreciated.
In any case, I trust Kyoto Animation will do their magic and make the second season just as brilliant as the first one.
