agree, there is no need for Japanese setting for his movie.

And chances are, they are going to change Light's name, L's looks would be far from the anime and the story would be altered.
I really hope that Zac Efron would be acting as Light Yagami.

Actually...I cannot imagine put Death Note in Hollywood style...
I read this manga and watched its anime and film directed by Japanese many years ago, totally impressed by them....

nobahn + Arklight: More like we're not gonna see it made, period, because they don't know what the hell they're doing in the first place.

Impossible. You can't screw up something that is already terrible.

Zac Efron is, unfortunately, far too old to be playing this role now, unless they get some really good makeup and special effects on it (like with Benjamin Button). Something of a shame, as Efron knew people compared him to Light Yagami and enjoyed the manga.

Silly shounen trait about super intelligent high school students must go. It won't work in the film anyway. Besides, Efron easily can pass as 25-26 years old man, he should be just fine as Light.

As long as Hollywood doesn't add unnecessary action scenes and just stick with the battle of wits, this could be good. Death Note is definitely doable in American setting.

The Japanese live action films made him a university student instead of high school from the beginning too.

Okay that's harsh >_> |
Honestly, the Japanese setting isn't exactly the most important part of Death Note, it's the story of an ordinary young man's descent into madness when given powers no man should ever have. You could replace Light Yagami with an American kid named Lucius Godwin and tell almost exactly the same story. |
Not true, Light is anything BUT normal and that's one of the reasons he becomes so corrupted by the end of the series. It's true the setting is pretty irrelevant though, it's more the fact that light is a pretty cold person, the only person he can't discard is his sister...so yeah again he's not ordinary, to say nothing of his intellect.

Perhaps "ordinary" wasn't really the right word to use there... "Upstanding" or "righteous", perhaps? I'd describe him as fundamentally a good person up until he got the notebook.
