This movie was outstanding. One of my favorite vampire animations. I have no faith in the upcoming CG-anime, but at least these old gems will still remain.

I was listening to the podcast, and I think they said that the battle between D and the vampire queen wasn't in the novels? Is that true? Because it was the best part of the movie. That, and the way Myers swooped down to save the girl, and sliced that blood-vampire bitch the instant he landed was so freaking awesome.

Yep, it's true; at least as far as I read (up to book 5, maybe?) no Carmilla, though I guess it's possible she was taken from another VHD novel further on; also, Carmilla has been around in vampire fiction for over a century, so it's also possible she was simply grabbed from outside sources instead. IMO, Kikuchi is a terrific idea man, but his writing and storytelling just don't execute those ideas all that well -- at least not at the point in his career I was reading (maybe he gets better later on). Of the ones I read, my favorite was #2, "Raiser of Gales," which was more of a horror novel than an action-adventure. In making the "Bloodlust" movie, Kawajiri changed quite a lot from the 3rd novel, and every single change was IMO for the better. Before he retires, I really hope he has one more VHD film in him. I'm just sad to hear the video quality is not up to par. My DVD still looks good upconverted on my BD player. But still if you've never seen this movie get it. It's a true anime classic.

I was pretty hyped to pick up the BD, but after reading some posts about the PQ and seeing some screenshots my ardor has cooled.
From FandomPost: Screenshot From Blu-ray.com:
From Justin's Twiter:
I'll definitely pick it up at some point because I don't have the UV DVD and I really enjoyed it back in the day (I also think it holds up reasonably well), but I'm not in a rush anymore. I'll throw it into the basket when I need to get free shipping. |

Kind of sucks that one of the visually packed anime films has a completely hamstringed BD. I felt that way about DYRL as well, since that BD was also not perfect (when from blurry to super grainy depending on the scene), aside from the ADDING censorship which is not cool. At least Justin warned us quite a while ago that this one was not going to impress.
Oh well, maybe we'll get a Cyber City OEDO 808 BD. That third episode should make Kawajiri fans just shit themselves. |

and its completely superior compared to the 85 movie. unfortunately this movie doesnt have what the other does for its release and thats a sub version. dont get me wrong cause i'm a dub only otaku at best with very few exceptions, but not having a sub version for this movie is kinda half baked if you ask me. and it is a good movie to boot. unfortunately for otakus like me who already have the Urban Vision version, its better off not to get this one. especially considering that Disoteck/Eastern Star really effed up the blue ray release which have been a pattern when it comes to re licensing old series. |

I don't think that they so much "effed it up" as that there was a limit to what they could do with the visuals. See the notes in the review about the technical issues with the format in which Bloodlust was made.
However, do also remember that the movie has never sounded better. So at least the BR succeeded on that. |

Waiting for a sale for this one. Was not a fan of his previous film Ninja Scroll which had excellent production values in service of nothing(can't care for the action of I don't care for your characters).

As I remember the third novel, it was only about the chase. Meier's payed bodyguards were the only real opposition to D and the Brothers, and it was mostly about them fending each other off. The climax was D fighting Meier after one of the bodyguards killed Charlotte (he was a parasite like the one in D's hand, and it wanted to change over to Charlotte's body), and it all ended at a launch station in front of a space ship and not inside a castle.
Carmilla might have appeared in another novel afterwards, but if she did she wasn't a major character in any book. |

Maybe it's just me, but picture quality > sound quality. |

Carmilla wasn't in the novel at all, instead being an original creation made solely for the movie. Even the novels after Demon Death Chase have no equivalent (Kikuchi being in the middle of Tyrant's Stars). Anyway, disappointing to see that the BD isn't very good even though the film still holds up after more than a decade. It also helps that they get a bit more into D, but not so much that he loses his mystique what with him saying how he can't have a normal life due to his heritage as well as the illusion of his mother who he cuts down with no hesitation, though since we don't see his face after he does so, we're left to wonder what he was feeling at the time. |

Wait, I keep hearing that they wanted a theatrical release for Bloodlust back in the day. How would that have been possible if the master really is so bad they can't even get a proper 1080p out of it?

Did you even read the part of the review about the transfer? Bloodlust was produced in an oddball cel/digital mix that wasn't really done before for an anime movie, nor was it done afterwards. Because of that, it's impossible to remaster it the exact same way any other anime movie can. It's not that the master was that bad, it's that the way the movie was produced; no matter how pristine the master is (& I'm going to bet that Discotek was given the best possible) it wasn't going to look much better. |
