Wasn't all that into this one. The whole shota thing (more explicit in the manga, but that ED though) is something I never really got comfortable with, not least because they kept reminding me that "he's so mature for his age" which is every sex offenders defense. The romance itself wasn't bad by anime standards, but it did suffer the usual problems of TV romance where things happen apparently just to create enough drama to pad out another episode. Also, if you're going to make a musical, have more than one song. Tender Rain wasn't bad as Disney ripoffs go, but having it sung in nearly every episode got very tiresome.

I still wish we'd have a full version of Grandmother's song. It was amazing.

It kind of still annoys me that this series gets such a positive reception when if the leads were gender flipped it'd have been bashed as being disgusting pedo garbage.

Vaisaga, if it makes you feel any better, I dropped this show the moment I saw the age of the boy she was being paired up with. Bleh.

No, it was a series called Save Me Lollipop and the age difference was largely ignored. Also, she gained about two years in the dub so maybe that helped. She was 12, he was 19... no, wait, that's Sailor Moon and she was 14 ... which makes all the difference.. In Lollipop- why didn't they do anything about that name?- in the show, the girl was 12, Zero was 15 and Ichi 18, probably older. Also, it was a series aimed at girls so, yeah, this is a thing. Not the only example too. Speaking straight about royalty, this pairing is at least, um, healthy. Neither's an infant and they're both, you know, entering or past puberty. There are more important things to hate about the show like... I can't think of any, I really liked this one. But I didn't think the sun kingdom nobles hated the pairing because of ethnicity but because they were a Podunk kingdom that didn't offer them anything politically or economically. They have rain, that's it. |

Really wish people who keep harping on the age difference would realize that Livius and Mike's relationship is never perverted in the series like most ecchi series were the main male character will end up 'accidentally' groping younger female characters because LOL paedophiles are funny. :/
The series is a less historically accurate version of Bride's Story manga where, again, the age difference is not perverted but, the result of political/societal convenience. Really enjoyed the show for building the main duos relationship without any toxic undertones for the sake of being 'hawt'. Livius doesn't start out lovable or kind but, grows more aware of his feelings gradually like a child/young teen should. Nike was fun throughout the series especially when spoiler[she threw her voice out to kept Livius and his uncle from leaving the gazebo. ] Also, wish this has gotten a second season but, I'll just read the manga for now. |

Agreed.
Also: What's up with there being no DVD?! Not everyone has an HDTV! |

Well, then it's time to wake up and join the 2000's, now that we're over halfway through the 2010's. It's been over 6.5 years since any analog/SDTV signals were broadcast in the USA... Apparently, we're at the point where a moderate-selling show (which can support one disk type, but may not be profitable if it has to manufacture both types) can make back the cost of a BluRay release, and doesn't have to be DVD-only anymore. I welcome this change. |

You know, I'd probably have an issue with the age difference if this series handled the romance differently. Add to that, due to the period it is seemingly based in, I've no issue with it either.
Will get my hands on a copy of this soon. Don't think that it'll be brought over to Aus, so will be having to import this one...adding it to my list of imports. |

I am not sure what you are referring to here -- Livius' actions toward Nike or his ability to rule his world? Well, reportedly Alexander the Great was only 12 when he showed he could ride a horse nobody else could ride. And this story doesn't dwell on it, but it seems implied that much of his achievements are due to his wizened (if somewhat goofy) advisers. Livius (and the audience) might have a misconception of how much is position is owed to his own talent versus the adults around him putting him up on the pedestal. But that seems to me a perfectly believable situation. As for his relationship with Nike I find it tiresome how many people squawk things about "pedophilia" and whatnot. First of all, there is no reason to insist that contemporary cultural values apply to this fictional world. Second, in the real world this kind of "marriage" has happened any number of times (in both this and cis genders) in history with regard to rulers with full blessing of the moral authorities of the time. Finally, these two characters never do anything sexual at all to each other. On the contrary, Livius acts a lot like I would expect a boy with royal authority that has not been sexually awakened yet toward Nike. He tries to bully her. He claims her as property. He climbs into her bed fully naked with a sense of entitlement but no apparent lust or embarrassment. (He apparently knows that monarchs must never act embarrassed.) But he never gropes her or anything of the sort. A few years older -- you would think it strange if he didn't. On Nike's side her depiction also seemed totally natural. She's a virgin bride-intended but it turns out that her groom-intended was Livius. His ability to master her as a male isn't there but his royal authority is for real. She also never acts with even the slightest lustful intention. How they gain respect and affection for each other -- that's the story and worth watching exactly because it is "problematic" not in spite of it. So I don't get all the problems that posters seem to have with this story because of the ages of the characters. I would rate it a bit higher than Theron but that's just a matter of taste I think. |

The latter, as that caused a recurring "suspension of disbelief" problem for me. I never really had issue with the former, pretty much for the reasons you state later in your post and because, historically speaking, age has never been a major factor when it came to royal marriages.
Riding a horse and running a country are two different things, though. And I beg to differ that the story at all implies that Livius depended heavily on his advisers. In fact, it instead implies more that he was very hands-on in his leadership. I wouldn't have had a credibility issue with it if he had been portrayed more as a figurehead while the adults around him did the actual work. Remember, he would have started the whole conquering and unifying business at age 9 based on details in the storyline. |

He doesn't have to be a just a figurehead at age 9 for this story to work. All he would really have to do is to take the mantle of authority and have competent underlings. The chancellor presents a diplomat from a neighboring kingdom that irks him (not hard to do with a 9 year old), he issues the order to conquer them. Generals get busy and it is done. Maybe he rides with the army maybe not. Probably does because it is exciting and he gets to issue new orders. Being incompetent at age 9 he doesn't realize what really has to happen and what the consequences are but he is pleased with the immediate result. Maybe he doesn't realize how much luck played in his victory but he is still pleased. Other nations don't see it that way and take umbrage, this time initiating conflict. Lather, rinse, repeat. World conquered. Not implausible at all, IMHO -- well within the capabilities of a bright and headstrong and most importantly indulged 9-12 year old. Peter the Great was czar at age 10 and this could have been him were it not for the politics in his court. |
