simply, everyone is weird! they just cannot understand that anime fans love anime as much as sports fans love sports, and sci-fi fans love sci-fi. weird huh. |

Ok,That pretty much explains everything from your end. (I didn't have time to read the previous posts from this thread since it was almost time for me to head out. And after seeing that interview/debate, i was anxious to jump in with a comment or two.) In retrospect, i feel that G$ probably set you up as "that cosplaying otuka girl" stereotype who's "nerediness" can be compared to the bee suit wearing girl from the old Blind Melon video. The fat girl comment wasn't cool. Same goes for anyone who would comment on Mays' appearance. No need for those kinda remarks. Hopefully you will get another chance, with more opportunity to speak while defending the legions of A-fans out there. And maybe you can show up as Morrigan. Thanks for clearing that up. -A casual Anime fan. |

What I really don't understand is how the title "does anime suck" have ANYTHING to do with the interview....the entire (broken off) interview was about how crazy/weird the fans are. G4 are seriously confused.

I can't believe G4 sunk so low! And to think we anime fans used to support their network! Well that settles it, I propose that no anime fan EVER watch that network again!

First, HezaChan. I love the Mink costume. I am a huge fan of Dragon Half, and your Morrigan was EXCELLENT.
Impressive work, and I am jealous that you have the courage to cosplay, as I am too shy to, though I will sooner or later. Now, on to my friendsat G4. What The Hell Are They Thinking! I used to watch TechTV. I adored it. BUT, G4 has started a strange skew over to Sci-Fi / perverts. The Man Show? huh? explain what that has to do with anything in their fan base? TV for gamers? All they seem to have done was grab whoever they could to do "The Feed" and that countdown thing with the only woman in the world who would do Howard $tern. Morgan Webb is okay, X-Play is okay, and actually seems to follow their main mission. Beth Otrosky (sorry if mispelled) is a standard perky little thing that knows little of what she speaks of unless it's about "Hooowaaard" (her only claim to fame). As for the rest, a lot of them seem to be no more than cue-card readers. I liked it better when they used actual experts to host the shows. It would seem that they have gone into an active campaign against anime in general. I do believe they are the type of people who have seen one episode of DBZ, then possibly one Naruto, then suddenly become experts on why Gohan can kick everybody's butt. I have been into anime since I saw, sometime in the mid 80's, a showing of Dirty Pair with a couple of Japanese students translating as it went. Yes, I watched Speed Racer in the '70s BUT I didn't know it was anime at the time, NOT did I know I was an otaku at the time. I have a job, I watche non-animated television, I have ungodly amounts of manga an anime on my shelf, I have a life, as most otaku have. Most of the cosplayer I know are intelligent, talented, articulate, and extremely interesting people (HezaChan) and deserve a lot more credit than a bunch of idiots with no clue as to what they are speaking of. G4 needs some direction, and a look at, maybe, I have no clue, a format different from this garbage that seems to be pointing at "faces" and shots at, and I quote, "clueless rabid fan-boys". They have lost their direction, and shall suffer for it. I am disapointed with what my TechTV has become. It has become a mutant bastard child of E! Sci-Fi, and 1000 bad video game commercials. I tire of this subject. In a nutshell: G4: 0 out of 5 low blows. May Gibson roast in a place a few degrees warmer than an industrial pizza oven. Brother Mays, You held your end up very well, irregardless of the limited time and idiots you faced. The kawaii HezaChan, You did as well as you could with the way you were treated by the assassins of G4. Be proud of yourself. Kevin Pereira: If you were ACTUALLY interested in the subject, and your producers were trully interested in a fair unbiased debate/discussion, they would have allocated enough time for the segment, rather than make what is strangely like an ambush interview. I was waiting for the lolita card, or the yaoi thing to be thrown in... Feh, I was NOT impressed. I hope either G4 roasts like a chicken on a spit, or learns what the hell the "culture that they have permission to attack" "because they know us so well" really means. Obviously, they need to read their mission statement a few more times. Doctor DETH AKA: Bill Ahh, yes, Just reminded, and Thank You Digital Apocolypse, Why the hell did they only show cut scenes and openings from games? doesn't G4 have any real anime clips to play? Or did they even care enough to find something other than video game footage? That, to me was interesting... DD Last edited by Doctor DETH on Sun Jul 23, 2006 6:18 am; edited 1 time in total |

After reading several different arguments all over the place, I'll post this here. If the statement doesn't apply to you, then I wasn't intending on aiming it at you. I've been commenting in places like the Attack of the Blog segment for this program, and this is what I came up with:
Okay, this interview is totally uninformative and way off topic. What the question ended up becoming was something more along the lines of, "Do ANIME FANS suck?" and not "Does Anime Suck?". To those of you who are sitting here saying you don't like anime... why don't you actually come up with a good reason, and not just, "It sucks just 'cause, okay!?" That's like your mom tells you to go to your room and you ask why and she says, "Because I say so." Yeah, you never thought that was fair when you were a kid either, did you? Next time, sit down and watch something before you criticize it. I'd at least listen to your argument if you knew how to hold up a good one. I'm extremely disappointed in how the cosplayer's appearance panned out. She was given very little room to talk, and from what I hear, she wanted to wear a BETTER cosplay, but it was requested more than once that she wear that particular costume. Then she gets asked questions and isn't even allowed to answer. I realize there's a time restriction, but come on, tell the other guys to shut up for a few seconds and give her time to speak! On top of that, you realize anime fans aren't the only cosplayers out there, don't you? People of every fandom and every walk of life dress up, chill out and become somebody they aren't. When you go to a convention, you see not only anime cosplays, but also video games, J-Rock, American sub-culture, Internet subculture... heck, I've seen someone cosplay as Dr. Phil! In all honesty, you can't just plop this all down into "anime fandom". The sports fan analogy was well brought-in. There are sports superfans that can be scary. But what about music superfans? The kids with the jackets with their safety pins and band patches all over the place? Or the hip hop fans who think that wearing butt-showing pants and walking around rapping to the beat of their footsteps is cool? So I chose animation as my fandom. I wouldn't choose either one of those other fandoms. And they probably wouldn't choose mine, either. And that's fine with me, so long as they have good reason. The anime footage shown were from anime video games, and not from any actual anime series. None of it actually showed anything dramatic happening. They were intros from these games - something they put together to make the game look fun and entertaining. It's certainly not something that would make me want to watch the show. If you people REALLY want to see examples, go watch a real show. Look at Cartoon Network's Adult Swim perhaps, though they tend to edit things for an American audience, like we can't handle it. As far as the other two guests are concerned Anime News Network's editor was dead on, however Gibson was way off base. He was uninformed, and I would have much rather seen a guy who disagrees with anime but at least has knowledge of what's up with it. Anime is broken up into many different genres, and you can't dismiss it as either being entirely porn or entirely childish. There's sci-fi, ninja, harem, fantasy, cute high school comedy-dramas, everything you can think of under the sun. There is at least one show out there for any viewer, even if you think you don't like anime. You obviously haven't given it the chance. Can't any of you think of anime as just another form of story-telling? It's its very own story, it's just that the story teller chose to animate it in a very Japanese fashion. The ones who hate for no reason are really quite shallow. Anime is not the only things we're fans of, and we all have school and jobs. We live real lives. Anime is our hobby, and it's only our life if we get a job in the industry somewhere. And for the one guy (or anyone) who is arguing that they don't watch anime because of what a sick culture it comes from (the Japanese), I ask, what is your problem? Japan is THOUSANDS of years steeped in culture. Us here in America only have a couple hundred years on our back. You haven't bothered to really, honestly, truly learn where this all comes from. And you don't think some of our own entertainment programming is sick and twisted? Shame on you. I could rip into this for hours... but I'm done. G4 used to be anime friendly, but they've tossed it to the wind and are in fact insulting it left and right in place of pop culture, which isn't what we're looking for. "People really love anime. People really love cutting themselves and watching Two and a Half Men, but loving something doesn't necessarily make it good." Thanks for blatently making this whole segment a joke right from the start. /end rant |

I'm not going to go through reading anymore crap like this. All of you that have something to say about Heather need to know a few things. First you should know how she ended up on the show. http://forums.cosplay.com/showthread.php?t=88043 Go there to read her story. Secondly I'd like to point out that she is a superfan not that any of you could have been able to tell that from the 4 minute interview although you all seem to think that you know her from just seeing a small clip of her. Also, she was asked to wear THAT COSTUME you morons! And last, to the person talking about Japanese culture and whatever, I'd like to point out that we are in America and last time I checked you don't have to be Japanese to love the animation, you just have to know what you like, so what if you don't know the culture or how to speak Japanese and who freaking cares who the Japanese Emporer is!! Oh my God a fan needs to know everything about Japan to be a fan? You're Morons, complete morons! |

G4 Has Really been Screwing us over these days, not one anime-related Thing was touched at Comic-con '06 except for a few cosplayers......... I Seriously Hate Kevin Perrera Now, He's ofiicialy thinking "F!@# All you anime we don't need you here, Everyone wants 'good stuff' Like the Fatastic four movie, and Star Trek V: The Final Frontier!" after that I can't help but think of all the Death Threats G4's getting after how they've been treating Anime. KP Should be kicked of G4 and Replaced by someone who KNOWS what they're talking about like.....Darrell Surrat from Anime World order, or the OG Crew. Or Maybe Ichigo and Batou from Anime Pulse, Hell we'll take Greg Ayres or Apocolypse Dowell at this point!
Until then....Thank you G4 for scarring us anime fans for life! |

I don't know if criticizing the host is really the right way to go about distributing blame. The guy's just doing his job and from the sounds of it, it's the AoTS creators / producers who really need to be grilled because what you saw is what they wanted. They want to present anime fans as being superfanatic and obsessive and maybe a little socially awkward.
Just from the horrible title of the debate: Does anime suck? ...What kind of debate question is THAT? What has anime done that's wrong that would make it suck all together? Somehow this escalated to Do anime FANS suck? Cause that's what the whole premise was about essentially. I think Jonathon did a great job at countering those stupid stereotypes and the cosplayer displayed a really calm, non-obsessive attitude despite Kevin labeling her an "anime fanatic." Honestly, anime isn't an underground thing anymore. When it was people *did* have to put more effort into watching it and thus became labeled socially inept and that attitude has continued into an era when fans don't have to put as much effort to watch anime because it's become a lot more mainstream. Especially when it comes to the whole cosplaying hobby. Please G4, lay off cosplay already cause you don't know how to portray it RIGHT. Cosplay requires you to be socially active. It's a social hobby, period. |
