I mean, "Bride of the Strait" sounds a little odd as a translation, but what on earth was wrong with "Detective Conan"??

The name Ron E. Howard immediately springs to mind. . . Rolling Eyes

Do you mean Robert E. Howard, creator of the Conan the Barbarian series? Because if he did a book where Conan becomes a detective, It'd be the first I'd heard of it. Rolling Eyes

Yes, of course. Embarassed

Don't feel so bad - I had to double-check to make sure you weren't right.

But seriously, does his estate really have a stranglehold on the name "Conan"? That would be weird. I mean, no one would confuse this with the Conan the Barbarian series, not just due to the packaging and concept, but due to the whole premise. A ripped Cimmerian with a sword... solving crime! Yeah. I'd love to hear the whole story on Funimation's renaming of that. Maybe I should ask the Answer Man...

Luckily there's some of the original geneon box set releases out there.so they may not be a good reason for this one unless it had better extras, espeically if they included the soundtrack like with fate stay night..

Well, the original Geneon release of LE Vol. 3 did include an English dub of a picture drama. Considering Key didn't mentioned it, I can assume Sentai didn't include it in their release which is a shame.

Meanwhile, though, as that rare beast, the straight female yuri fan, does this series veer more towards cute or towards fanservice? If it's the former, I definitely want to give this a rent.

First off, high-fives for being a fellow straight female yuri fan. It's good to know that there are others out there.
Secondly, I don't know if I would describe Kannazuki no Miko as being cute, or fanservicey. There's nudity, but I don't consider that to be fanservice. I think the closest thing to fanservice is jokes about Himeko's chest size.
Kannazuki is more melodramatic and serious than anything else. I need to give it another watch, because honestly, I can't remember being overly excited about it. But if you're going to rent and not buy, then I'd say definitely check it out.

I always thought this was a series that succeeded as entertainment for me.... in spite of itself.

Much like Shattered Angels, you can rattle off a list of anime tropes and this one has it. But this one has better characters and a more sincere triangle. Was always on the fence about the existing Singles/Set. The price was getting ok, but the shelf space was excessive for something I "kinda" liked enough to might watch again someday.

The Sentai release addresses both of those issues with a downside to the Dvd/Box art.

I mean I like my Utawarerumono/Godannar/Venus Vs Virus single/art box commercial failures that I snagged from the bargain bin for a steal, but the space they hog, is substantial.

Oh, come on. Since when are shower scenes like the ones in this series not "fanservicey?"

Ah, apparently I had forgotten about that. It's been a while since I watched it, and honestly, I didn't remember there being that much fanservice in the show. But I've been wrong many times before, and it seems that this is just such a case. Although I still don't consider nudity to be automatically classified as fanservice. I'm guessing the scene you mentioned goes beyond simple nudity.

In general I agree with you, and that's something that most of the more mature anime fans out there do appreciate. I typically use the "is it gratuitous or not" standard to determine whether or not partial or total nudity is fan service, and in this series there are definitely some gratuitous scenes. Even shower scenes can avoid being fan serivce if it's just a straight-on back shot of the character, but panning the length of a character's body kinda makes it hard to justify any other explanation. Wink

If you want an example of a series which has a fair amount of nudity bit little true fan service, the upcoming Spice and Wolf is a good example.

Kaishaku do love a good shower scene LOL I can only think of one title that lacks such a scene.

I like my good ole singles, they had pictureboards included. Good to see it's still available for the anime viewing public, now if only the manga could be reissued as that is terribly HTF nowadays, the geneon editions are still plentiful in stores so I'm not so sure releasing it out at this point is entirely a great choice.
