Layoffs in marketing and inventory/warehouse.

Lower sales and lesser staffing needs, that's all. It's not a sign of anything bad -- just tightening the corporate belt a little.

Personally, I think its a losing battle to try and make anime mainstream... the conservative US masses just aren't ready for the standard that Japan offers its audience. For me, even little things like a spat of blood or a boob jiggle set some sort of idea, whether it be drama or comedy, for a scene. And by taking it out, the audience won't get the intended feeling.

That's the same way people felt 5 - 10 years ago but look where anime is now.

I really wish that we stop thinking that every little ripple in the water means the demise of the "anime industry." Lay-offs are a common occurance in this day and time. Anime is a business. But it is a BIG business! And it is only getting bigger by the day. A little re-adjusting in a company doesn't mean that that company is closing or in trouble. Let's remember that!

Genon tends to anoy me, while they get some of the better anime in my opinion. There episode count on there disks tends to suck, and whenever they can, they will make the last episode a cliffhanger. The way they format there DVDs tends to get to me too.

Forgive my rant....

Eh, atleast the disks you buy aren't edited only. *Looks at the upcoming Viewtiful Joe DVDs*

(And no, I won't be buying those DVDs)

I wouldn't say that. At least not until the HD/Blu Ray war sorts itself out.

Pioneer/Geneon would always have great titles and now there seems to be crap mixed in. I really hope they dont turn into ADV and continue licensing more crap. No matter how many classics you own, crap always outweighs it. Gungrave ended, Champloo and Saiyuki Reload are about to, and all I'm really looking forward to is The Count Of Monte Cristo. I know I might be missing something but I just cant rememebr right now but not much I'm looking forward to from these Juggernauts.

Wait, what? Geneon licensed V. Joe, yeah? Why the hell are they releasing edited DVDs? Have they been stricken by a sudden bout of stupidity?

It's all down to the global economy slow down, and people not buying luxury items like DVDs and books. Geneon can see the prospects for a happy Christmas and are doing damage control earlier like ever other business that live, or die on consumer spending. The only economy that's booming is China, and we all know what comes out of there in exports. Wink

Well, while I like genoen and all I don't buy there dvds too often because of the episode count and cost of the dvd. I started buying anime dvds with ADV and robotech which was probably cheapest anime out there and had 6 epsiodes to a disc. So coming off the pricest into higher prices with less episodes kind of took me off the ball a bit. I've started to to come into terms with the pricing though so no big care anymore.

Even if they did go that route which is debatable, ADV seems to be doing just fine.

Of all the companies that got hurt by the market in the past year and a bit, ADV was hit the hardest.

ADV is doing okay now, but they laid off a lot of people earlier this year (a lot more than Geneon).

Chris Beveridge mentioned here that the news of the Geneon layoffs happened over a month ago. I search thru AOD's news archives from the last two months, and I couldn't find anything there that proves his statement as correct. Searching thru the Net didn't help me either. Can anyone confirm Mr. Beveridge's statement as fact?

The Anime industry in the US is obviously in a deep slump. The easiest way to tell is what is going on.

1) Gleicher leaves Manga Entertainment. (Forced or not)
2) Bandai announces that foeign sales contribute to decline in earnings.
3) ADV, CPM and Geneon layoff staff.
4) Number of titles being licensed drops significantly.
5) Funimation or Navarre decides to enforce copyrights strongly.
6) No shows get licensed at AFM last week despite the fact that most major Japanese companies were there.
7) Anime shelf space at Best Buy and Suncoast are shrinking.

By the way if ADV is doing better why was the production company offering Full Metal Panic 2 last week at AFM. This was one of ADV's better selling titles the last year or two.

Probably not. But it's essentially the same situation as what happened at ADV. The layoffs happened and then a month or two later or some period of time it showed up in some news article online and then was posted elsewhere. Did a lot of people know about it before hand? Of course. But it wasn't at a level where it could actually be reported because the people that could confirm it probably wouldn't. Same as the old license question, "we can neither confirm nor deny"

I mean, I've been doing this for almost eight years now. There are people who are no longer in the industry that still have friends that are and word gets around fast no matter what. Like a lot of that, a lot of it simply isn't reportable until it hits up to a higher level.

Okay, how do we know Geneon doesn't practice "downsizing" the bottom 1/7 of their company every year to get rid of under performing employees.

This is a common practice in investment banking and consulting.

It is not a total surprise, the USA economy is "soft." Wal-mart just issued a report that they missed their 3rd quarter this year. It is the first quarter in 11 consecutive quarters that their gross sales shrunk.

Black Thursday may not be that black this year.

If that is case, Geneon acted prudently given the overall condition the USA economy is in.
