For some reason I didn't get the reference to Kusanagi at first, but then it became obvious. I always did find the first season of Stand Alone Complex a bit odd that way.

I always attributed Major Kusanagi's choice of dress due to the fact, that except for her brain, she's all machine and has been that way since childhood. Probably choose to dress that way for operations, for its effect on the targets. She does dress more formally for official events. Cybernetic bodies are interchangeable for her. Technically, she'd be a bad choice, but I guess due to the popularity of GitS she is at the forefront now.

The Lovely Angels of Dirty Pair would be a classic example, along with the numerous D&D bikini chain mail clad fighting women or girls.

That is the outfit chosen by the leader of Section 9, a counter-terrorist network and anti-crime unit operating in the Japanese National Public Safety Commission. And no one in the show has a problem with. In fact, they don't even notice.

Get it now?

Thanks I get it now (couldn't tell if your 'get it now' was in a irritated tone or not...)

Although at least in the movie, Motoko did have stealth skin that would make her almost invisible. And her "skin" was like plastic. The TV series outfit was actually more modest than the movie.

A better example might be something like Virus Buster Serge.

Section 9 is not known for its dress code and like real life certain people can get away with breaking rules, if their skills are in demand.

I know a person in my job, that can get away with arguing and insulting our boss, because he is highly skilled at what he does. No one else could do that without getting fired.

Do people whose bodies or body parts are interchangeable, think like we do? That mystery and concern in GitS is part of its interest. A lot of the members of the team, could take severe injuries (that would be permanently disfiguring for normal people), and bounce back with replaceable parts.

I'm glad that NIna finds something wrong with female outfit designs of anime/manga with serious storyline.

For Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex, I totally blame the Manga artist for the original design and animation staffs who simply followed along. Yeah, Kusanagi outfit is just too ridiculous for its serious story line. It's total fan service without being too obvious.

Anime Insider magazine printed a letter about this once:

"If police officers in the future dress like prostitutes, then what do prostitutes in the future wear?"

Love it! Twisted Evil

Awesome comic!

One the one hand I completely agree: from warriors to soldiers, the stripper/porn star battle dress is a joke. And the "it's for increased mobility, agility, dexterity, etc." arguments or justifications are laughable--call it like it is.

In fact, I think Balsa from Moribito is the only female warrior -I can recall, Senator- whom was dressed appropriately for her profession and the demands and dangers related to such work (and not like she was workin' a stripper pole or next on stage at Scores).

While on the other... it's the Major! In my book, a strong, complex & intelligent female character (a critically endangered species in anime and manga) can wear whatever she likes. And, IT'S THE Friggin' MAJOR!!!

One Word: Man Crush (Ok, that's two).

What? There is such a thing as a manly 'squee!'

Sorry CareyGrant... since the Major is a woman, tain't no mancrush, buster...
it's a crush crush...

The Major is always my first choice in sidekicks for the zombie-pocalypse, becuase she'll always have your back, and adminster the kill-shot if you fall.

In Other News...
Kevin never realizes that he and his minions are on the receiving end of a VERY subtle test, and takeover operation...

After all, if half the population are drooling uncontrollably, and half of the rest are up in arms because : "HOW can you wear that in public, it's indecent!"

How hard can it be to take over the world?

Not to mention the zombies would have no appetite for her.

I guess I'm the only one who thought of Burn Up! W after looking at this comic. The uniforms that Team Warrior wore were so skimpy, that you could easily see butt cheek even when the girls weren't bending over. And no one noticed or cared. One can't make the argument either that it would help increase mobility, because the skirts were also skin tight.
Fanservice is good and all, but stupid fanservice is just annoying.
