Huh. That never even accrued to me. The characters in Alita weren't really Asian, were they??? I remember a seeing a picture of most of the cast and it looked like a mixed bag of different ethnicities.

Remember how the facial hair of the actor playing Superman was digitally removed in post-production, the result of which being worse than their original appearance?

It appears that the situation with Gally's eyes is the complementary problem to this.

I hate those CG looking eyes. Sometimes looking like the anime and manga can be a bad thing.

I think the eyes work well if they drive home the fact that she still isn't a regular person.

Oh my god! they're whitewashing Kansas City,Mo .... /s

What the Hell, so many white actors portraying characters living in a futuristic Kansas City,so un-immersive,,, /s

Whelp only thing for me is the CGI main character, her eyes primarily.

Edit: guess purists could bitch about her name not being Gally.

The setting is a futuristic Kansas City if I recall correctly.

I believe the original Battle Angel/Gunnm manga series was set (post apocalyptic) Missouri of all places, if I remember right... which would help explain the ethnically diverse cast. Either way, people won't complain about whitewashing right now...they are too distracted by the eyes.

The actress that plays Alita is Hispanic. So "brown washing"? That would be such a dumb thing for someone to complain about but the internet is filled with insane people.

26th century USA -
Kansas City,Mo = Scrapyard
Colorado Springs,Co = Necropolis
And I believe another setting is in Texas

(The eyes are too Gollum for me Smile )

Oh dear, I usually complain much everything about a Hollywood adaptation of japanese originals but this one is perfect. People saying the eyes are weird, but I feel very okay with it. Hyped for its release!

Robert Rodriguez wrote:
It was always Jim's intention to create a photo-realistic version of the manga eyes that we're so accustomed to seeing. We really wanted to honour that tradition and see that look standing next to any human character. To have the right person to emote behind it was really essential. Her origins are in the film and you understand why she looks that way. If the eyes are the windows to the soul, we have some pretty big windows. You can see a lot going on in there! When it gets to the emotional scenes it's really uncanny and striking. And captivating!
